Engineering Costs - deck

We are planning a new kitchen that will include opening up the rear wall or our house (stucco on wood frame) and a steel deck. The house is in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The quote from the structural engineer for design and drawings for DoB is $10,500 plus $2,000 for inspections. This does not include architect or expediting. Does this sound reasonable? Any recommendations for more affordable engineers in the area that are familiar with this sort of job? Thanks

If the engineering is just the deck, that seems high. But if “opening up the rear wall” is anything more than modifying a window opening to make a doorway, then it’s probably reasonable.

I believe you don’t need an engineer for a deck. .An expediter can draw it into the plans.

My understanding is that an engineer also holds a license as an architect. So in our case we just went straight to a structural engineer (since we knew the work would need a structural filing in addition to an architectural filing) who was also able to handle the architectural side of things as well and it was much more affordable and efficient to have one guy do it all.
So he filed for everything and even had an expeditor in house so it was very easy and he could be up front with all the expected costs. In the end, that project went about as smooth as possible.
