endless double parking in front of house!
So, there’s a fire hydrant/no parking space in front of our house. Now that we’re in lockdown, I realize that all day long drivers (maybe waiting Uber drivers?) pull in and hang out there in their cars, sometimes idling with the engine on or music blaring for HOURS. Is there anything to be done, apart from being The Annoying Lady who asks people to turn their radios down?

have you considered posting a sign asking car owners to turn their engines and radios off if they intend to double park? This might help, but if they don’t comply, call 311.

stan star: i heard about this on NPR. what you do is send a time stamped video in but if i recall correctly, this is only good for commercial vehicles. the law probably still applied to cars and such, but we can’t initiate a fine against them the same way we can against commercial vehicles. that was my take away from what i heard on the radio.

I would suggest sending in video of the idling cars. These days they have an app to submit and you can actually get paid for it!

Bob is right…again
The New York City Administrative Code, Title 24, Section 24-163 establishes that no person should allow the engine of a motor vehicle to idle for longer than three minutes while parking, standing, or stopping. However, there are two exceptions to this rule. The exceptions apply to the following:
Legally authorized emergency motor vehicles, and
Vehicles whose engine is used to operate a loading, unloading or processing device.
In addition, the legal idling time is reduced from three minutes to one minute around public and private school facilities as set forth in the Local Law of the City of New York Number 5 for the year 2009.

AFAIK the no-idling regulations apply to all motor vehicles and you’re only allowed to stand by a hydrant during daylight hours

Only commercial vehicles fall under the no idling law, and as long as you stay in your car it’s totally legal to park in front of a hydrant as long as you like. I would just put some cones out to discourage them

The 311 app may be your best weapon! We live in a woodframe with a fire hydrant right out front. We’re pretty ruthless about reporting to 311 when people park overnight. I don’t really care if they’re in their cars, but we’ve had a massive fire on the block recently, and I’m not about to let our house burn down because somebody can’t be bothered to park legally. Don’t even care if we’re the “annoying neighbors” on this one. It’s a safety issue.
