Electrical wiring work
Anyone tell me what they’ve paid or could expect to pay to have a 3 floor around 2,200 sqf house rewired and a new panel put in

Years ago I was responsible for bringing in an electrician to add circuits in a building as needed. A line here, a line there. Coffee maker here, light there, dedicated line for something there and maybe a switch in between. It was a big building and we were constantly adding circuits.
Look at the word cate uses “points”. The electrician we used allowed me to write the quotes for what I wanted done based on each “point” and a run of wire or conduit by the foot and based on awg. A point was a connection from the breaker or junction box to a switch, an outlet, a lamp. There was a standard charge for each point and I forget what it was and it would be more now anyway. There was a price per foot of wire or conduit added to the cost of the point. Once it was explained to me it was very simple.
If someone can find out what they charge per point and per foot of wire, they can pretty well add all of this up and estimate their job. Allowing something additional for the installation of the box and perhaps pricey things such as ceiling fixtures and repairing the plaster (we patched walls) .

As someone who’s done it recently, around a similar sized house, it depends entirely on what you do. Number of devices, 3 way switches, dimmers, etc. Most of our lamps are on 3 ways, nearly every lamp is on a dimmer, we have outlets many places (including a handful outdoors), jamb switches in all the closets, and had the whole house wired with Cat6 and coax in every room. We also had the service upgraded from 60amps to 200amps, with a new panel and a sub panel on the second floor. All told we paid around $30k. Good luck.

Twelve years ago we rewired a three story (2,800 sf) plus cellar house in Bed Stuy to ccde without gutting the house or removing the original detail. It cost $15,000 including an optional plaster expert to close up the holes and tcck the crew three weeks. Bids went as high as $20,000. Naturally it would cost more now. (We just paid $4,000 just to rewire three doorbells over three days.) The company that did it specialized in whole house rewirings of historic townhouses and was based in the neighborhood, with three crews going at once. We marked where we wanted points, with special attention in the kitchens and baths, and wrote down instructions to keep everything, and they did everything we asked.

There’s a fair number of variables that would affect the price dramatically, especially if you are doing this as part of a renovation where studs are exposed (making it far easier to do) or instead pulling wires and smacking holes all over the place and needing to patch those later—and if you’re doing that you’d need to bring your house up to code I believe, which means way more receptacle, the addition of GFCIs and so on. Safest thing to do is get 3 bids. And often if you’re doing renovation work anyway getting someone who has worked amicably with your GC in the past can be a good thing.
