Electric subpanel

We are rewiring the house as part of a renovation. Do people recommend adding an electric subpanel or is the main electric panel in the basement sufficient? It’s a 4 story house. Thank you

Many of these are put in for conveniance in residential installations especially in these houses where there are a lot of stairs to the basement.

I do not believe length of the run is the final determination for the need. It is voltage drop. So if you really do not want to install one but you or your electrician feel there might be voltage drop across a run of no 14 wire on a 15 amp circuit, ask them if you can use no 12 wire on the 15 amp circuits. That will reduce the voltage drop. The way a sub panel works to reduce drop is the wire running to it would be heavy.

When we had some walls open in this house, i pulled no 12 wire up in case we need it later. For 15 amp circuits. I might only use the no 12 to the junction box and then use 14 to the 15amp outlets.

Maybe if you are in a 4 story over a cellar or over a basement and cellar, you are pushing no 14 wire to its limit? Its a question for a licensed electrician.

Afaik code doesn’t allow for long runs without subpanels. We have one on our middle floor.
