Electric meter installation
We bought a 2 family house and the seller dropped the ball on getting the meter installed for the unit we will be living in. It is in process with ConEd and needs the seller to pay the deposit for the meter and then their electrician to submit the appropriate check list paperwork. Then ConEd installs the meter. It does not appear that the seller is going to come through with this agreement and there in not a lot of leverage to apply.
My question – if we take it over (which means starting over, I know), what are we looking at in terms of cost, most of which would involve getting our own electrician.

Hi namaha – The panel box/premesis has already passed the ConEd inspection, The issue was not ConEd. The issue was the seller having trouble moving the process along and paying the meter deposit invoice. I discovered from the ConEd energy dept that the invoice did not have to accompany the check so long as the case number was on the check.. So, check has been cut and sent to ConEd. The process is moving along. So far, no reason to start another Service Application. Yes, ConEd itself is a potential bottleneck, but that will be true no matter who the electrician is. All the electricians I called said that starting a new application should be a method of last resort. And since that determination is not in their best interest, I am taking it as true. So I am cautiously optimistic as I knock on wood that the process will move along, if not as fast as I would like.

@CostumeLx The issue is since the seller and/or electrician are having such hard time getting the meters installed correctly. You might have other issues. Maybe its just ConEd is slow because they are BUT there might be a chance that the installation are not done by code. You will have 2 parties inspecting the area, DOB and ConEd. If things are not done properly, you will have to address. As others point out, ConEd is very slow..it will take months.
As far as if you stay with the original application or go with a new. This is something you will need to ask all the electricians when you are getting your quote. They will usually explain to the best route..Definitely get more than 3-4 quotes and recommendations.

Que sera, sera. At the moment, Con Ed is not an issue. But today, the process moved forward. So at the moment, staying with the original Application for Service seems to be the way to go. But I never got an answer to my questions.

I’ve had my service upgraded which included new electrical meters. After the electrician finished, it literally took 6 months for a coned inspector to come out, okay the install, and another month or so for them to come out and install them. Changing electricians won’t do you any good. I personally emailed and called the coned office and person responsible to try to speed up the process, didn’t do any good. They simply get to it when they get to it.

Hi namaha and resident2 the only thing involved is an electrician opening up a service request to ConEd to install the meter. All the rest of the system is in place. If a new DOB permit needs filing with a new electrician, or changes made to the panel box because the 2nd electrician won’t sign off – that would be more, I know. I am asking for a ballpark of the first scenario. – electrician opening up a service request to ConEd to install the meter.
But basically, the situation is – do I continue with the current application which costs me nothing, but is moving along too slowly or start again, which will cost me money, but I gain control. Regardless of the terms and escrow, etc – I am just looking for a ballpark amount for hiring an electrician to see the application through.
However, in the meantime, I have reached the electrician who is on the current service request and am more optimistic that the process will move forward. But if it stalls, I am planning on cutting my losses and taking it over.

As it was a flip; do you know if the seller even filed with DOB for a 2nd meter? you are asking for an estimate of job that you have not given enough specifics for.
Did you Attorney come recommended by the sellers agent/brother/girlfriend? by chance?
In which case Sue them all. And file a complaint with the Bar Association & Attorney Generals office.

Just to give you a figure, the quotes I got to replace all my meters, electric breaker box, service pan, make everything up to code and DOB permit.. it ranged from $5k-$8k. Since you dont have anything, cost might vary.

(I answer this way refusing to believe that the buyers atty would have let this slip by – it’s no small thing – therefore I’m assuming that there’s probably escrow somewhere in there that OP is unaware of). Hence, my strong suggestion for OP to reach out to his/her atty before proceeding with ANY estimates.

I should have said it outright but the amount held in escrow will be roughly the amount you should expect to pay to finish, to answer your question directly. Though that amount held for you may not be dead on, it’s an ok ballpark idea of what to expect.

My question is anyone have a ball park at what we are looking at in terms of cost to take the installation over ourselves?
And thanks to mozeeatupu – I will get estimates, but I was hoping for some insight into a ballpark figure. That was going to be my step 2.
So — any insight to my question?

Wow, didnt even know this was possible. Go get some quotes from licensed electricians and timeline. When we had our meters upgraded because we had old Pacific Electric boxes, it took almost 2 months to replace the entire thing. ConEd is really slooooow. Good thing is you will be getting the new smart meters.

Yup, closed on the home. No meter on one unit. And yup, a flip.
So — My question – if we take it over (which means starting over, I know), what are we looking at in terms of cost, most of which would involve getting our own electrician.

It sounds like another flip!

Just for clarity — you have already closed on this home? And there is no working meter in one unit? Both?
