Elderly tenant flooded units...Options?

I have an elderly, stabilized tenant that left the kitchen sink running and overflowed and flooded his kitchen, damaging the floor, the walls in the unit below him and the ceiling on the first floor.
What options do I have to recoup any costs to repair and fix the damage?
Anyone go thru anything similar?

I lived below a family whose children were constantly overflowing a tub that leaked down into our apartment. Luckily they didn’t damage anything. Had they, I would have asked them for payment. That’s what you should do here in additional to contacting your insurer. If this is a case on ongoing risk because the tenant presents danger to himself or others – ie. untended gas flame, larger flood, you may consider adult protective services or reaching out to relatives.

You can’t recoup anything from him except from his security deposit (if you even have one). File an insurance claim. If you think this may be an ongoing problem you can install alarms that detect water on the floor (they are usually used for laundry rooms).
