Ejector pump and check valve for overflow - cost to install?

I am getting estimates to install an ejector pump (30″ round and 30″ deep) to push rainwater out of the waste pipe in my house and a check valve for overflow to avoid flooding during storms. With the storm from Hurrican Ida in early fall 2021, I had water flooding into my basement because the pipes couldn’t handle the rainwater from the roof. I was told it would take about three days to install, involving digging a hole big enough in the pit to house the pump. I got an rough estimate that the cost would be between $21K-$35K. Is this the going price for this type of work? It seems high. I was hoping to spend closer to $15K.

lookingforanswers – TBH, if you have no backyard I would just inconspicuously send it down the driveway. If its just a few times a year, and the choice is either basement flooding or sending it out to the street….. sometimes you have to break the rules when there are no other realistic options. Just one opinion.

I just wanted to ask for those who have no backyard and only a shared drive thru alleyway. Is a drywell able to be put in that area or would there be another possible location.

You would be better off to ensure all of your interior waste pipes are performing as they should (sounds unlikely), and build a dry well in the yard than going with an ejector pump contraption. If the city sewer is overwhelmed, that ejector pump will have nowhere to eject to.

Yes this is why people go the french drain with the sump pump in the garage approach. My question about that approach is the drainage hoses on the sump pump work ideally up to 40ft. The length of most houses from front to back are over that distance. Is that even an ideal setup. That ejector pump in the front could have massive problems with any kind of blockage. I was looking for more exterior options that someone may be able to suggest.

I’m puzzled by the solution being suggested to you. Water should flow by gravity out of your waste pipe. But in a situation like Hurricane Ida, would an ejector pump even be able to compete with the tremendous volume and pressure of water already running through the storm drain? Isn’t the issue that the exceptional rainfall of a big storm overwhelms both your home’s waste pipe and the city’s storm drains?

This is a good question. The plumber said the ejector pump would need to be installed at the front trap with the check valve. The water in the back came out of the water pipe opening because the pipe wasn’t moving water out to the street. I think the idea is that the ejector pump would keep the water flowing so it wouldn’t back up in the back. If the ejector pump doesn’t do this, then I don’t know how to handle the water coming up in the back of the house.
