Draining roof rainwater
Long time reader, about to renovate a detached house (not brownstone) in middle Brooklyn and wondering about roof rainwater. Can the roof leaders be connected to a drywell on the lot, or must we connect to underground plumbing and send it out via sewer? The latter makes me a little nervous, besides the cost, adding that load to below ground plumbing with freak rain events more and more common – thinking that will ultimately back up?
Any and all thoughts appreciated.

What are the drainage issues? That’s an excellent idea to get a video of the line. Our regular plumbers were able to do that for our sewer pipe going from the front of the cellar out all the way under the street and to where it meets up with the bigger city line. (We were having mystery leaks. It turned out our pipe is in great condition, and that is really helpful to know.)

One option would be to install a dry well that can absorb a portion of the water that comes off the roof. If you get a heavy downpour, the dry well fills first and then any additional water goes into the main house drain and into the sewer. This way, the dry well acts as a “shock absorber” during a heavy rain.

Maybe look into a video inspection of the line first to see if there is something in there.
I am considering getting a sewer line video inspection camera as part of my home inspection business. If people began calling for this service i would probably run out and buy one.

If the roof leader is currently connected to the house sewer pipe, I wouldn’t change a thing. Everyone I know who has updated their system to run the water into the backyard has caused their backyard to flood and water to come into the house when it rains. This is with a French drain that ultimately hooks up to, you guessed it, the house sewer.

In brooklyn it drains down a pipe to the sewer. Not a drywell. And yes, the rain has caused issues. Others have wtitten about this on here.
