downspout/drain inspection

Hi!

Anyone have a reco for someone to come stick a camera down the downspouts, find out where they go (sewer? back yard? some other mystery place?), and if there are any clogs or cracks? I know for sure something is going on with one of them because i can see water spurting out of the cast iron part (in a place where it looks like someone once tried to repair it), as well as where a “newer” aluminum piece that rises up 2.5 stories connects to the cast iron part, where the when there’s heavy rain.

There are also two floor drains outside that should also be investigated – one might be leaking into the basement.

@ katiekeating did you find someone to inspect the downspout & exterior drains for cracks, and if so, who did you use? I am starting to feel like a break in the line where the downspout meets our main sewer line in the back of the house may have been the source of our water issue in the cellar…

to cate’s point. i thought about doing these video inspections as part of my home inspection business. Not sure if sellers would want that – but perhaps for owners. the more i looked into it, the more i realized it was a bad idea. sending that kind of thing down into a sewer line that may or may not have other issues (i am not talking about looking for a backwards slant or a clog) could create more damage and with someone running a business, that could get put back on them in the form of a claim. understand, if you pay someone to do this, they may ask you to sign something (my research indicates that if a home inspector were to do this, they should be asking for also sorts of waivers) and make sure they have insurance in case it is decided that they did cause the damage. if something cost 40k to fix, all sorts of people will be pointing fingers (i really mean insurance companies).

i was going to let you know this – i did find a downspout line clogged all the way to the top on a home inspection recently. not just down at the elbow where colonial suggest s – but to the very top at the gutter. it was a very old line, not to the size of modern ones and it looked like it had not been cleaned since day one.

$40 buys a 33 foot BlueFire endoscope which works over wifi on Amazon. I have one and have used it for main sewer line, downspout, pipe to and through drywell and chimney. Works well with my iPad mini. Try it before you pay $600 for the “QUOTE pros UNQUOTE” to swing by.

Try a local mom and pop owned plumber that specializes in drains and does waste line inspections with a camera. We just had it done for $600 for our main sewer line from the cellar to the connection to the city sewer across the street. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend people because I work for Brownstoner.

Stuff builds up in the elbow especially if you don’t have any filters on your drains or gutters. The waste line may also be cracked below ground from tree root incursion. These houses are old, and many didn’t do much beyond “quick fixes” when they weren’t worth much in the 80s. We’ve replaced every waste line in the house due to roots that messed everything up and allowed to grow unfettered.

Island Sewer was usually who I would call before our pipe renovation. They’re good guys and do good work. Now that we’ve replaced everything including the sewer line to the street, we don’t have any more leaks, or clogs, or backups aside from a downspout in the front. I bought a $300 1/2” drum snake from harbor freight and I snake it once a year – cheaper than roto rooter. We also have drop-in filters at all of our gutter/downspout connections and both of my downspouts have cleanouts on them for easy access.

so i just recalled something. i have a neighbor with a hole in the downspout. when it rains like it is today, water leaks out of that hole. one time i saw water shooting out about 3′ or so as a constant stream and i went over and saw that the down spout was clogged at the elbow and cleared it for them. if it is not simply leaking out but is squirting out, my guess is that there is a clog. you need to have someone who works on waste lines check this out-

I probably should have given more background. The most concerning downspout is in the back of what some people call the extension, but it was part of the original footprint, has a stone foundation like the rest of the house. I’m

This morning at 7am there was water running down the outside of the cast iron part from where the aluminum part that goes 2.5 stories up to the roof connects to it. And the ground around the where the cast iron part goes into the cement next to the house was wet but no pooling or standing water (I have videos but they’re too big to post here – i can send separately if that’s helpful).

At 11am the ground had loads of water and the cast iron part (where it looks like someone once tried to repair it) was spewing water. At the same time I started to see little trickles of water coming from the foundation wall inside the house.

We’re renovating and knew there were water issues but now that all the walls in the previously “finished” basement are down, we can see where the trouble is.

A waterproofing guy (LLoyd from Mid-Atlantic) happened to be over today to look at the situation and I showed him my videos and pictures and gave him a tour and he said that i should absolutely have the lines inspected because there could be cracks, decay, clogs, who knows what going on and that that was very likely the problem (along with the pooling water and gap in the cement that goes up against the house). He also said I should have the other downspouts and drains (maybe floor drains aren’t the right word – they are exterior drains in the front of the house, one by the stairs into the cellar, and one on a cement landing by the parlor floor) checked since those could be problematic, too and where we’ve seen water in the past is on the inside of the basement near those exterior pipes.

So what I’m looking for is someone who can inspect the pipes, see what, if anything, is wrong, and advise on how to fix them before I start any interior solves.

also, know this, if you are not sure, you can put your ear up to a cast iron waste line in the basement and hear water running through it during a rain storm. Just make sure there is no other running water when you do this. i don’t use my ear, i have a stethoscope for this-

If you are in Brooklyn and this line is in the rear of the house, it will go down and tie into the waste line (often below ground). you should be able to see the 4″ waste line as it runs to the back of the house (often along a wall on the side where the bathrooms are stacked), with the line from the commode (and kitchens) coming down and tying in to it someplace beneath the restrooms. The waste line often continues on seemingly to no where without nothing else running to it – that is where it will tie to the line from the roof drain at the back of the house. if you see a line coming in from the back that is a little smaller than the main waste line, that might be a 3″ line from the roof drain.

someone with a camera might be able to make sense of what is going on with the floor drains but that just may be outside water you are seeing in the basement.

if you really want to know about the floor drain, wait until a day when it is not raining and let a garden hose run into it all day. that may or may not do it as a garden hose is very different than a severe rai n storm.

i can make sense of some of this for you but in honesty, i think you can look at all of this yourself and figure it out. when you see that 4″ line along the basement wall and follow it and see other waste lines coming into it below the kitchens and restrooms, it will start to come together for you.
