Door Replacement Recommendation

We are looking to replace the entry door under our stoop. I’ve been waiting on a quote from one company for 10 weeks (supply chain issues I guess) but I am at the end of my rope with them. Can anyone recommend a door installer?

FWIW I replaced my flimsy wood back door (identical to my interior closet doors) with a simple insulated fiberglass pre-hung door. It eliminated drafts and allows me to keep the door from my kitchen to my garden mudroom open in the winter, keeping the space heated on the winter. The thing eliminates drafts and even looks decent, with a textured faux wood grain that looks realistic when painted. I wouldn’t use a door like that in a place where aesthetics are important, but it serves its purpose.

Is the rough or stone to stone opening that size or is that the current door frame opening? You seem to be on the correct path thinking you need a pre hung as that will afford you the built in insulation you will need after removing the second door. There are ways to seal a single door as well, without the pre hung.

Tell me more. The person you require is more than a person to hang doors. Depending on conditions you may need a custom unit. If you think you do, you want someone like Vaughn at heights or nate at south slope workshop.

If you provide more details, I can think more about this later.

Steve and doors by are the same.

Right now we have two entry doors under the stoop, which creates a very small, mostly useless vestibule inside the house. Both doors are incredibly old and no longer fit in the opening, creating a lot of holes where air is coming in. We’d like to replace the first entry door with a pre hung door (I’d like a 3/4 light wood door with reeded glass), which will probably require some additional work in the installation to get everything straightened out. Then we’d remove the inner door and just use the one exterior door moving forward. The size of the opening is 34×80″

Beyond Steve’s excellent advice I’m not sure if you’re referring to a wooden door or a metal gate. The latter is an entirely different specialty.

what is the issue with the current door and what is the size of it? what is the condition of the frame?

if you can tell me that, i can tell you what some of the issues might be with sourcing a door and if someone has visited you and left without returning a quote and they are not used to working on old properties, they may have found it is a custom size and found it to be pricey, more perhaps than they think they can justify the price of to a customer.

it may also be more than a door installer you need. people do not seem to just do that and even i shy from it because it is a lot of running around for something that takes an afternoon and not everyone installs locksets (i do and i have all of the tools for doing so).

i don’t really install these basement doors. i have made a couple and i have repaired a few on site (not rebuilt, they are often not worth it).

i do not mind guiding you a bit.
