Door knob installation

Looking for rec’s for someone who can install some door knobs. All for interior doors. May require chiseling/adjusting the door a bit since previous knobs were terribly installed.

Asaph, can you post the name of duane’s company? Website or at least a last name? It would help duane because too many people in brooklyn have called “some guy with a number” and really had their doors damaged by people who have no experience.

Op. From what you just told me it can be that the mortise for the face plate is not large or deep enough or the mortise pocket for the lock body is not deep enough. Both can cause like trouble. A third possibility exists and that is that the pocket is a little snug on the side but that does not sounds like this is the case here.

On these interior locks, you are correct that a chisel will work if the lock face is not seating because the mortise for that is too narrow or too shallow. This is easy and a homeowner can do it. But there are a few things to using a chisel correctly.

In so far as the depth of the pocket. It is very difficult to try to chisel that out. In the modern sense, these are cut with lock mortisers (btw, even though i don’t like to list things for sale on here, i do have two porter cable lock mortisers for sale, model 513 type 1: these are not for homeowners). Another way to deepen these pockets is with a spade bit and a drill. When using a bit to mortise, the bit must overlap by half or it will miss an d leave cone like bits along the edge. So if you use a 5/8 bit for the pocket, that bit must overlap the previous cut by at least 5/16″.

Do NOT attempt to use a spade bit to do a complete lock mortise on a narrow door. The spade bits “travel” or drift as they move through wood, throwing a curve into the bore: they can cut right through the face of the door.

Be very careful if there is glass in the door. If you go too deep on a narrow stile the point on a spade bit can hit the glass.

This stuff is stuff homeowners can do. I know, they do not teach shop class anymore and it is sad but all a person needs is a very basic class to show the possibilities and plant the seed. In my grandfather’s generation ALL men did this stuff around the house; i think serving in the war taught them a lot and gave them confidence. I suspect the wwi generation did less of it.

Yes I don’t think this is a locksmith job. Doorsby – you’re probably right that the lock case isn’t set deep enough. I definitely need someone who could handle chiseling a bit at the door. Is there anyone the group recommends?

United locksmiths is not a locksmith. They are a national marketing company that takes calls and sends out contractors. The locksmith they send out does not work for them and has nevet met or been interviewed by the owner of united. I cannot say this is true of united, but most of the service calls i get to repair wood doors damaged by “locksmiths” come as a result of someone calling some toll free number and asking someone who does not know a mortise lock from a cylindrical lock to send someone out whose competency is questionable and who does not give a care because his name is not on the side of a van or storefront.

I doubt united carries a nyc locksmith license.

The really good locksmiths in brooklyn have store fronts with names like miguel’s, billy’s, 5th ave. They have owners who often answer the phone and who vett the employees and stand behind their work.

I don’t doubt that tshields had a good experience with united but i do question wheth er someone would get the same technician this time around, maybe, maybe not and who do you complain to if it goes wrong? Someone in Oshkosh?

I used United Locksmith: https://unitedlocksmith.net/ a while back, and they did some work on the door while installing a new lock. Works great still to this day.

The door used to have seasonal issues with the lock with the wood expanding, so the lock would misalign. They did something to it, and now everything works great year-round.

Can i ask what might have to be chiseled to install the knobs? Or do you mean the lock case is not set deep enough and hence the entire knob and lock set is wonky?

If the woodwork gets too involved, it may not be a job for a locksmith.
