Door entry handles

Besides the obvious big box stores, where can one go to see in person different front door entry sets/handles? Or a place I might be able to find an antique one ?

so cate, this was what happen with the product from House of…. Someone i had not yet known went ahead an ordered it and called me to install. i did the install and then we learned that every time we set the toggle buttons to lock and threw the bolt closed and then open the bolt, it opened the toggle buttons (that one sets to either lock or unlock the knob function). i think the bolt was attached to the toggles so when you locked it it locked the handle and unlocked it. here is the problem with that: a lot of parents what that push button permantly disabled so if the kids step outside they do not get locked out. we could not disable these buttons and i called house of historic hardware and then i did some research and found the manufacturer of the lock body and when i called them they said that was the way it was and there was no way to set the knob lock button in one position and leave it. you can set it one way or the other but the moment you threw the bolt it followed the bolt open or closed.

that was a big upset for that customer. i only install Marks on jobs where cost is an issue or Baldwin on jobs where the budget is a little bigger. that is it. and the Baldwin customer service, i use a guy name tom and have his email, he can help me through any issue or custom configuration.

i used to use charleston for hinges. i was happy with them.

cate, the ease at which a lock can be picked is a function of the cylinder and any cylinder can be put in their mortise locks.

a customer ordered something from House of … a few years back and asked me to install. i went to do it and found a specific issue with the lock. i am trying to recall exactly what happen and will post later when i have it sorted in my head. aside from that the products are light and made my many third party manufacturers who really do not have a stand alone reputation like Marks or Baldwin.

Steve! I personally like Charleston as they have period reproductions which are historically appropriate and you can avoid the hassle of finding matching parts from antique dealers. The latter is almost impossible to do.

Level is miles ahead of Ultraloq but both are ok design wise. https://august.com. If you want to look at some nice hardware: Katonah, Simons, Elegance or the Brass Center.

@Lurker, thanks for that info! Very good to know. I’ll let my husband know about the security issues as he’s in charge of this project. I do wish Ultraloq Pro looked better…. Hey JP I have experience with those. First, you can pick the lock easily. They have beautiful hardware, however to unlock your door you either need to enable geofencing,or rely on the touch scheme, or use the app which is a bit tedious and no easier than carrying a key. For the touch and geofencing to work you have to leave a zone of 800 feet from your home after locking it in order to be able to use touch to unlock it again–meaning if you pop outside to the corner or a neighbors or go to your car and come home or leave and then want to run back inside for something, you end up needing to get out your phone call up the app to unlock the door. And if you happen to leave your phone inside your house and lock the door, you are locked out (unless you carry the key). There are many better options. The ultraloq pro is excellent and much smaller than many models.

the house of antique hardware lock bodies are garbage. the product itself looks good though.

as jane said, matching bodies with lock plates is impossible. so what we do is find old lock plates with the skeleton key on the bottom. we clean the antique stuff up and then using the old knobs put them through the spindle hole on a new Marks Lock body. and then we bore a hole above the old plates for the cylinder. we can put any cylinder in. we do this for doors we rebuild and we do it for once off customers. the work takes about an afternoon including buffing and sourcing parts and install.

Good one Cate! There is also Van Dykes, Vintage Hardware & Lighting and Historic House Parts. I didn’t post too many online sites as OP said she wanted to ‘see’. I find online is easier/faster and sometimes cheaper. Unless one is investing in hardware that you need to see in person, online is the way to go.

nest yale lock is excellent. There are lots of great options now. it’s slightly on the big side but is quite nice.
