Door bell, Alarm systems & keyless Entry

We live in an area in bed stuy where it is not an option for a package to ever be left outside our door without a high likelihood that it will be stolen. We also will have a tenant. That said, I am looking to install a system that will allow me to remote buzz in the FedEx delivery person, but also have keyless entry, and a regular doorbell. I don’t want to always have my phone ready and available in order to hear the doorbell ring… and what happens if I am not home. I guess I’m curious how other people have set up their homes (who have tenants) to account for all of these types of concerns.

You can also keep it simple … buy a combination key storage lock (e.g.,, Masterlock storage box for $20). Our lock holds the key to a metal gate which accesses ONLY the area under the stoop. They don’t have access to our home. The under the stoop area is great for leaving packages for us and for our tenant. This also works for access by ConEd.

I did exactly what dorkofwindsor suggests (with exactly that hardware. I put the yale lock on a gate (with a traditional lock on the inner door) so that I can let FedEx or UPS into the space under the stoop to leave a package without giving them access to my home (since they do not have a key to the lock on the inner door. I haven’t actually set it all up, but that is the plan.

One issue: you want to set the door so that it will swing closed by itself so that you can relock the door/gate if UPS does not pull it shut.

hmmm… you could try to piece together a skybell HD as well as a yale real living keyless lock (with zwave and a home controller). I think both can be done through your smartphone. The yale will require a network bridge (z wave home controller), such as veraedge etc. Check out smarthome.com and gokeyless.com These solutions are really just picking up steam, so i wouldn’t go nuts dollar wise because you may want to upgrade in a few years.

Hi, The only way you can always have direct access to entry is by purchasing an IP Video Intercom System. You can have a monitor on each floor and one for your tenant. When you are not home and someone rings your door bell you can remotely speak to the person and allow for your delivery.

My parents are elderly and I installed a video intercom system which is great. They can see who is at the door, they can actually speak with the person and have an access to open the door for them. I also did an alarm system, which I know when they are entering the house or leaving through my phone. Its really cool. Look at www.alphavideoalarm.com. They were very professional and knowledgeable.
