Does anyone really eat a kitchen island with stools or pass through eating area?

These are all the range, but does anyone really sit on one side of a kitchen island, facing the kitchen cabinets/stove/etc. with your dinner partner sitting on your side? The same thing for pass-through type eating areas.

This seems possibly useful in theory – but I’m really interested to know how many people actually use them. As you can maybe tell, I find them gimmicky, unappealing and a waste of space. But maybe renters would actually use them?

Looking for some real world feedback – thanks!

I am assuming you own a brownstone. If so you may be limited to that 20 x 60 foot living dimension over several floors. I have a huge island. It has the main sink (a deep farmhouse to hide the dirty dishes), It has a wine fridge, it has a small shelving area for cookbooks, it has 3 pull out areas that work as an appliance garage for little used equipment. It has a spice rack and it holds a dual drawer dishwasher. It can also seat 5. I love my island because I am confined to a 20 x 65 living dimension and I use my front parlor as a full living room. Before we renovated I had a dining room in my front parlor and we found that we barely used it and it collected mail, coats and bags or clean laundry. Also people gravitated towards or dour old kitchen anyway and leaned or perched against any and every available surface. It just made sense to put in a kick ass kitchen and a big old island. So in answer to your query. I think islands are great. You can gain valuable storage space. You can use it as your main eating area and if you have access to an outdoor you can have people move between the two spaces and protect your living room from becoming a receptacle for spills and whatnot. I also think if you are a creative cook it creates a feeling of inviting your guests in. Also if you do Thanksgiving or big holidays it serves as the landing area for dishes and buffets and your living room can be the all sprawl area. If you are adding an island for a renter, I think you may find more interested potential renters who know they have an island that will serve multiple roles and they don’t have to buy or bring a table into their new space. our tastes sound similar to yours, citizenjane. We decided on having an island, long but narrow, and without an overhang that would allow for seating. The dining room is a separate room but right next to it with a broad open archway so people sitting at the table can be in conversation with people in the kitchen. Guests still love to gather around the island when we’re entertaining, but it’s nice to move to another room (even if it’s five feet away) to sit down with food. The dining table/chairs are deliberately un-stuffy – we really wanted to maximize the use of the dining room, which has a lovely view and historical details — so that the table is also used by our young kid for playing; our bill-paying; etc. I’m pretty confident that even if we added an overhang and a row of stools for the island (not that our kitchen really has the space for it), we’d still do our eating at the dining table. But this a comment about our own brownstone residence. If you’r e thinking about this for renters, many renters don’t even have a dining table, given the limited space in most rental LR’s, so the island becomes the default dining area.

I never thought we’d be counter-eaters, but yes, the counter, a very large butcher block slab, has become home base for the kids at breakfast and often for dinner and weekend lunch. It lets them hang out while I cook, they sometimes help, and it’s not in the way really. I always looked askance at breakfast nooks, which like balconies in New York never seemed to be used, but in our case where it’s very close to the cooking area and well lit and has enough space to cook without getting food on those seated, so it’s an integral part of our kitchen.

We have a large counter with seating in our kitchen and we use it all the time – much more than our large dining table. We have comfortable counter-height backed chairs, rather than stools.

Our house is 20′ wide. But the kitchen and DR are narrower as the entry foyer and a hallway take some of the full width away. I will see if I can get good pics.

When we bought the house, the kitchen was in the back of the parlor, separated from the front by a pair of pocket doors. The front was one big room and really not usable in any efficient way. We worked with Baxt/Ingui Architects who came up with several creative solutions to deal with the space. We decided on the solution discussed above. Not cheap, as we had to move all the kitchen plumbing and remove a marble mantle. But we have been very happy with the set up since completed more than 15 years ago.

@bored_at_work, I would love to see pictures of this if it’s possible? This is what I am sort of envisioning for our parlor floor remodel. Sounds perfect. How wide is your home?

And I will be the lone voice of dissent and say that we have a massive island that I feel takes up way too much kitchen space and is definitely not worth it! We don’t sit there much, and prefer our couch or true dining room table.

Our kitchen is now in the middle of our large parlor floor. When we renovated, we looked at a number of options to divide the space and settled on a new peninsula to separate the dining room, which is now in the front, from the kitchen. The rear of the parlor, leading to the deck, is now the living room .

The peninsula has a raised counter with three stools. The sink, dishwasher and lot of counter space are behind and below the peninsula. We dont eat there very much, but during large gatherings, its a popular place to hang out, and separates those cooking and preparing from the rest. At really large gatherings, we can seat three there. We love the way it works in the space.

We eat at our island all the time. It is also a really nice work space for baking, not to mention homework, paying bills, etc. the nerve center of our house.

Our island has seating on three sides and we use it every day. We almost never sit at our formal dining table- my husband and I spend the vast majority of our time sitting at our island. With that said, we do often sit either across from each other or diagonally over a corner so we’re not sitting strictly side-by-side.

Having a kitchen island with seating for four was one of my top priorities for our kitchen buildout. Ours isn’t a pass-through, though.

No island–we have a deliberately old-fashioned-looking kitchen–but we DO eat at a round oak table there. Our dining room gets very little use for it’s stated purpose.

also use more than my dining table. Great for breakfast or when when partner/spouse it cooking and the other is keeping them company. On work nights or with kids it’s just easier than setting the table.

Great to be able to sit at the island when someone else is cooking. We use it mostly for pre-dinner appetizers when we have guests. Don’t like pass throughs at all though.

We have an island with stools in the middle of our kitchen that is actually used much more than our dining room! It’s become the center of the house and a main gathering place for the family and guests. Not sure about the size of your rental but our space has been completely optimized and works great for us.
