Circa 1956 Magic Chef. Still works like a charm. Very clean with a warming oven.

My first viking (circa 12 y old at this time) and current both had some electronics. But they are plug and play modules, when they fail, you replaces the entire module (these modules are small components like this one https://www.amazon.com/PA020047-Viking-Range-Spark-Module/dp/B01MDMTM7S ) and are cheap pieces (like $30-100) and 100% a job you could do yourself. I had no clue about ovens, but managed it with ease.

The smart electronics are worth having – my Bertazzoni does not relight if the burner goes out. The Viking does. This is a great way to stop the gas accidentally getting turned on and then just leaking out. I have not tried to repair anything on the Bertazzoni as nothing has yet failed (24m old) – i should imagine it will be painful and expensive. SHe just has that look about her…. its like the Alfa Romeo of ranges 😉

I have had cheaper ranges in the past in rentals, and they were just fine. We were doing a huge kitchen remodel which cost quite a lot of money, so it would look a little out of place with a $600 range in there – but I’m sure it would have su fficed. For us we liked the higher heat burners and auto relight features of the viking, as well as knowing we could maintain it for as long as we have the house (we all know getting a range into a garden floor is MISERABLE). WRT the insulation – the Viking spills out very little heat, it is wonderful in that regard.

I’m sure the Viking is good about not heating the room, but so is our humble GE range—a big improvement over our early ‘70s Caloric.

Great info, brit_in_brklyn, many thanks. I presume the Viking is a relatively new model with electronic parts? (I have a friend who raves abut the old ones but isn’t as happy with her new one.) Also, if you have any experience with ordinary ($600 etc.) gas stoves vs. the higher end ones, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thank you!

Whatever you do, do not buy a Bertazzoni. We fell for the style and didn’t pay enough attention to the quality of the plates, the aluminium, or reviews online.

The oven seldom lights first time, something you are unaware of until you wait 15 mins and see the thing is not heating up. They push a lot of heat out of the front when the oven is in use. The plates around the burners have too big of a hole around them, saucepans often fall through. I can go on and on. On the plus, it looks great.

Fortunately this isn’t in our main home, where we went for a Viking. It wasn’t significantly more expensive and it is wonderful. Our last home had one that ran for 10 years with only one small issue. A spark module went and i replaced it for about $30 myself with parts on Amazon.

Aware i am taking this off topic, but i cannot pass on an opportunity to tell people to avoid Bertazzoni.

The range hood is made from on Eastlake-style cornice that must have originality been over a doorway I bought it in a Queens antique shop intending to make onto a hood, but it sat my cellar for over 20 years before II got around to it. The thing has the sort of fan an filter that would go into a ductless hood plus lights It’s lined with sheet metal. The applied carvings are new, glued over the outlines left from the missing originals. I originally intended to do it myself, but ended up buying the needed parts and having the cornice/hood modified and hung by a skilled neighborhood carpenter/handyman/genius.

Thanks for this info, Bob. We’ve considered all of the above and haven’t found anything yet. Right now were making do with an old, beat-up stove from the ’90s someone kindly gave to us (the cost of moving it across the neighborhood and repairing a few things was several hundred). GardenWeb used to have good reader forums about stoves. They were purchased by Houzz and I’m not sure if those forums are still accessible. P.S. I thought Bertazzoni is all mechanical (?).

Unfortunately your offer is about five years too late for me. We agonized for years about what to buy, so our experience might be of some use.

§ We really wanted a late ’40s–early ’50s range to replace our rusty 36” Caloric. We were most interested in ones sold by (mostly) California companies that restored west coast regional brands (which had the advantage of a pilot light for the oven–brands intended for sale here needed a match to light he oven, although they had self-lighting top burners). We were on a waiting list, but they never contacted us and ignored our emails and voicemail messages. Also, these restored ranges were obscenely expensive–as costly as new pseudo-restaurant ranges made by companies like Viking

§ A used restaurant range. We rejected those because they don’t have broilers. Also they’re not legal for residential use–less important for us since one would have been safe on top of the tile base inside a hearth in our kitchen, originally intended for a coal-burning range.

§ A residential pseudo-restaurant range. We almost bought one, despite the cost, but my wife hated that the ovens were universally very low to the floor

§ A slightly less costly Italian-made pseudo-restaurant range, such as a Bertazoni. or DiLonghi. These are beautiful, but I was distrustful of European electronics and wondered if parts would be available if the US distributors went out of business

What we ended up with was a 30 inch “regular” gas range–a GE model that was at the upper end of their lowest price tier–about $1,000. There are vastly more 30” models from which to choose, compared to 36”. We had a cabinet made to fill the empty space left over. I had originally rejected one of these because the electronic touch-pads are said to be unreliable, but realized that We could replace the whole thing several times over before equaling the cost of a Viking, or similar, range.
