Do I need a permit to build a pergola?

We have a patio in our backyard in Brooklyn. Do we need a permit to build a pergola over it?

booisgolden is right. As far as I can see, that document covers awnings which is different. In my experience, DOB uses specific terms that may be slightly different that what we’re used to. The Building Codes refer to a pergola as a patio cover and awnings are described separately. Hopefully Jim responds.

The work needs to be filed and permitted. That said, if this were temporary structure, smaller than 120 sf and intended to be dismounted in within 30 days, it would not. And of course, if the work is in a landmarked district it will need to be filed with Landmarks as well.

Where’s Jim Hill? Hopefully he will chime in. He’s our go-to architect/code master guru. He’s great at explaining everything without mansplaining or making us wade thru DOB blather.

My understanding is that if it doesn’t have a roof it’s ok. I only gave fast glance at the above poster’s link and couldn’t quite see pergolas whether y or n but I could very well have missed it.
