Dirty neighbor backyard.
Hello .
My neighbor does not maintain his backyard there are all the weeds growing like a jungle .
And now got plenty of mosquitoes because of
It .
And there’s also few rats nest .
For the rats I can call 311 .
It is a shame to let the backyard go like that .
What can I do .
Thanks .

The best way to resolve the problem is to talk to your neighbors. How long has it been like that?

I called 311 and they said there’s nothing they can do about it since it’s located in the backyard.
But they will send someone for the rodents to inspect the situation..
And about to calling the owner they don’t leave there .
And I made previous complaints in the past they don’t care .
The place is a brownstone turn like dorms .
Tenants moving in and out regularly.

Say your neighbor politely that dirt causes a lot of diseases and problem. Show her/him some case-study like some authentic source that which diseases are due to dirt. Ask him/her that does they care about house cleaning or not? If yes then not about the backyard.

We live in NYC. Rats are a problem all year long as are mosquitoes in the summer. Clearly the letter writer has a vermin/insect problem versus not liking the look of weeds. You keep your weeds and hopefully the letter writer will call 311…..repeatedly.

You can have well kept weeds with no vermin and you can have overgrown flower beds with vermin. I’m saying the species of plant is not the issue.

What’s wrong with growing weeds? How about the mosquitoes and rats nests the writer wrote about? Would you want that as your next door backyard. The rats and mosquitoes are mobile and obviously the letter writer is asking for some solutions – not sarcasm.

Is your neighbor elderly or in some other way not able to maintain it? Are they tenants?
It depends a lot on who your neighbors are.
Over the years and my many moves, I have sometimes offered to clean up & use their yard. In Fort Greene many years ago. I had a house just off a corner, so my lot was short, my elderly neighbor was not able to maintain his yard, so he agreed to me putting a gate in between & using / maintaining his garden. We both enjoyed it, he would come out & sit when he could. We had a vegetable garden & some lovely roses.
It worked out fine until he died; his son moved in and concreted it, than I had drainage problems!
