Diamond plate vs subway grate?

What are the pros & cons of diamond plate vs subway grate for a tiny deck & stairs leading from a brownstone parlor floor to back yard? I’m finally making some progress with this confounding little project & have to decide between the two. Thanks, everyone!

FYI there are a lot of fixed costs (Engineer/architect, inspections, permits, etc that approach 10k. Total). For us it’s part of a larger project so it’s hard to say how much it would be alone. you might as well go with the size that you can live with forever cause you will never want to replace it.

Thanks that’s very helpful. I may end up doing a quite shallow deck, big enough for a couple of chairs and side table–just a spot for a morning coffee–to keep it light down below.

We looked into glass and the cost (3x standard) didn’t make sense for what you get (a nominal amount more light especially when you account for there being furniture above). You probably want to do frosted glass so it’s not as bright as you might think). We looked at more radical configurations as well to get more light down there but DOB makes it hard to do anything other than the standard configuration. This is all assuming you’re talking about an 8x~19 deck off the back of the parlor floor.

What about glass flooring? I’m planning a deck too and am concerned about blocking light to the ground floor interior. I imagine that’s more expensive–has anyone done that?

I have diamond plate on my stairs down from my parlor floor deck & it’s easy to maintain. There’s no way my dog would walk on subway grate — so that was an easy choice.

Won’t be storing stuff underneath & don’t wear heels, so mainly trying to weigh safety, maintenance, & esthetics. One ironworker we spoke to said the cost would be about the same for each.

Diamond plate is easier to walk on, especially if you wear heels, but gets much hotter in the sun, so you may want those shoes in the summer anyway.

Subway grate allows for easier cleaning and light can get through. Plus appearance can be sleeker. Diamond plate may cost less.
