deck stair treads

This is a specific question about stairs leading from deck to backyard…If you recently redid a deck, what did you install and are you happy with the stairs? We are considering the most basic and common stair treads- diamond plate. Do these remain grippy and not slippery even in the winter months? If you have them do you like them? anyone have stairs with the circular holes, bars that lie flat, or even concrete/stone slabs? We’re not considering wood right now for various reasons.

i am not sure who did what but it pretty much looks like a nice new sidewalk. we had the whole thing built a little short of the door to the house so we can eventually put wood over the concrete but we have not gotten around to it and honestly I do not mind the look of the concrete.

Thanks! Did you have an iron works do the frame then someone else to do the concrete? are they slabs? Who did you use if you don’t mind me asking? Trying to get a price on concrete vs steel vs wood

my deck stairs are poured concrete. it is not slippery when wet.

I was looking into that type of tread as well. What kind of railing did you pair with it? I thought it might look like too much with the simple vertical bar type of railing. Do you have a picture of how it looks? thanks so much!

I did my stair tread and deck floor with 2″x1/2″ flat bar with 1″ spacing – Happy with it. A reasonable balance between light passing through to basement level and underfoot comfort.

We have a steel deck with composite decking, typical gray. The stairs were done with “subway grate” treads. Fine for shoes but not for small bare feet or dog paws. I had extra deck boards and cut them to width and attached to the grate with carriage bolts and washers. It is very clean, matches the decking and provides a comfortable surface. The tread depth was perfect to fit two pieces of deck board without ripping and allowing for space so debris doesn’t collect. I recessed the carriage bolt heads so everything is flush. Very happy with this.

Exactly, I’ve seen a number of projects done with ipe – both newer and older work. It looks great new and weathers very well. I will do steel frame and rails with wood decking. I’m just starting to piece contractors together now.

Well, we had ruled it out because I felt like it didn’t go with what we have already….I love the look of wood decking with the rails and stair treads made of wood, but we can’t do the decking of wood since it’s a roof, and we’re short on funds, so not sure we can do all of the trim…but you’re making me think. Were you going to do IPE? Do you have a contractor to do that wood work? I’m piecing together the workers to do this, so I’m not sure who would do the wood work if we went that way.

I was planning to do wood – do you mind telling me your reasons why? We have diamond plate now and water pools on some of the treads causing it to rust over time.
