Deck length from rear of house

Hello, getting a new deck per my prior posts. Architect is coming over Saturday. I’d like a definitive answer as to how long my deck can be. I have a 27 x 100 lot, my front “yard” is 18′ and my house is 37′ deep, leaving me with 45′ to the back of my property line. Can deck extend further than 8′ from my house? I need to make sure DOB doesn’t give me any issues.

The 8’ depth pertains to light source limit i.e . not blocking light from the windows underneath—according to the DOB rules.

Depends what type of grill. A charcoal grill is allowed on roof or terrace with 10′ clearance to combustible surface but not a balcony or porch. Natural gas is allowed on all. I’ve filed and installed gas within 10′ of buil;ding walls but not with wood siding.

so if your deck is concrete and steel and the house has hardie board siding then you are fine having a bbq closer than 10′ ? what about if you have wood siding?

i have seen decks that are built in such a way that the stairs are parallel to the house and come up to a sort of landing and this allows the deck to be slightly deeper than 8′ but that configuration does not really give you more useable deck space.

side note: one of my favorite catch 22s of NYC regulations is that decks can only be 8′ but BBQs must be at least 10′ from the house, so basically anyone with a grill on their deck (pretty much everyone) is breaking code.

Typically; if you go more than 8′ from the building, any windows to rooms below the deck cannot count as legal light & air for those lower rooms. And you generally cannot build within 30′ of the back property line.
