Custom light fixtures
Hey folks, years ago I had some custom (basically variations on other stuff in the shop) lights made but that shop on Bowery is gone. I’ve fallen in love with a fixture I can no longer find and was wondering if anyone has suggestions of shops that do this? It’s not very modern and for a brownstone. Thanks in advance.

It isn’t an antique fixture I’m going for, just one I saw a photo of and now the website is gone and I’ve scoured the internet for a line that seems similar and can’t find it. It’s not super complicated. I need someone who makes metal and globe fixtures from scratch.

I vaguely recall one of my neighbors having a bad experience with Roy Electric, but she’s since passed on so I can’t check. There also used to be Lite Touch, in Jamaica, Queens, but Rudy, the owner, retired after a fire destroyed his stock of antique parts. There MUST still be people who do this kind of work.

There was an antique light fixture shop on Seventh Avenue in the Slope during the 70s. The guy who ran it had a particular electrician who rewired all the victorian fixtures for him. You need to find someone who likes to work with lamps. There is also Roy Electric. They used be on Coney Is. Avenue and are now on Staten Island. I never dealt with them.
Then there is the do it yourself approach, the Lamp Warehouse may still be there, not sure. It as on 39th St. They would have the parts you need and possibly know someone who can do the work.

The people behind where I grew up had two of them. Early 80s models. The daughter hated the diesel model so much that she took it to college in virginia and on the way down rolled it over on I-95 just to out it out of its misery.

BTW that ‘76 Peugeot’ 504 was the best-riding, most comfortable car I ever drove. Not that I’d trade my present Subaru Outback for one.

Peugeot’s were quite good mechanically, but, as with many French products, different enough to make service difficult for mechanics unused to dealing with the make. We REALLY wanted a Citroen DS21, but by the time we could afford one (1976) Citroens were no longer sold here. They were far more peculiar than Peugeot’s and probably needed a plumber to deal with their suspensions. @bob: i saw one of these cars by woodhull hospital a few years ago. i was actually quite shocked that it was still running. quite stylish i thought, but mechanically? kind of like the Yugo,; there just aren’t anymore around.

No, it had a 2 L. gas engine (with a “thermal reactor “ instead of the catalytic converter found on normal 1976 cars. It was a great car, but PECULIAR!

I second what Cate wrote. You can save a LOT of $$ by buying one “as is” and polishing and re-wiring it yourself. Old American light fixtures are easy to rewire. OTOH I have two beautiful vintage French fixtures that I wouldn’t attempt to re-wire myself. [It reminds me of trying to work on my old Peugeot].
