Curious about original townhome layouts
In our top floor, 2 window-wide “bedrooms”, there are original door openings to the adjacent small, 1 window-wide rooms. How were these rooms used originally?
I notice many homes have this same feature.

I live in a Calder house too, and I have found a couple of classified ads in the Eagle from occupants of my home looking for a servant. Circa 1910. That was still common until the 40s I hear. Housework, with coal stoves, no vacuums or washing machines was heavy work. There were plenty of other ads. I feel that the small room above the front door on the second floor was designed according to buyer needs.
I can confirm that any walls over the king beam are load bearing. People on our block who took those out had to put steel beams in the ceilings.

What these small side rooms were used for vary depending on the era and type of house (single-family, two-family, multi-family) and, of course, the whims and needs of the occupants. They could be trunk rooms/closets, baby rooms, children’s bedrooms and, I would guess, offices.

bobjohn, every house (thousands) in my neighborhood are 20 ft wide and the joists span the entire width. Calder houses. Support columns are technically not even needed above the basement level – i hired a structural engineer and he told me that support on 20’ doug fir joists was merely a preference for level of floor bounce, no risk of collapse.

I believe that the timber joists supporting the floors couldn’t span the full width of the house, so there is a beam (on columns) in the cellar and all the walls above are bearing walls. So those rooms were created by architectural necessity and people chose to use the spaces creatively: bathroom, kitchenette, home office, child’s bedroom, etc.

I had thought it was used as a closet because the room that the little bedroom would have connected to doesn’t have one. It’s my son’s room now and has always reminded me of Van Gogh’s bedroom (but smaller).
