Creaking Floors?

Brownstoners, i did a home inspection this weekend and the customer asked me about creaking floors. not soft or week floors (that can be stabilized with an injection of epoxy) just creaking. i told them this “in the winter my house gets so dry that the floors creak. the air gets so dry that it becomes uncomfortable for us” to which the customer replied “the air is too dry”. i suggested they get at minimum some of those little vaporizers and put one on each floor. or maybe a larger humidifier. we keep these on all winter and the floors do not seem to creak as much.

can i ask others, is this your experience?

We have lots of creaking all year. Think this is wood rubbing against other wood. Guessing it’s because the floors are not as level now as when they were first installed in 1895 due to a variety of factors, such as joists/old wood having a tendency to sag just a bit. The old floors are one of the prettiest aspects of our house so we ignore the creaking. Also the creaking cannot be heard beyond the immediate room, so it does not disturb other units.

You’re also right about old Bo MBJ Ed Steve. As to creaking floors I THINK they’re louder in the winter, when it’s dry, but I’m not sure because I filter out the sound, like the sirens of the fire engines from the firehouse around the corner, or the planes and LIRR when I lived in Queens.

bob, i thought you were about to say it is part of having old joints and bones.

in my house i notice it goes down when we run vaporizers on each floor. BUT this is the only house i have had that concern in so i have not experienced it elsewhere. does it change with humidity?

i do not want to say things to people that may not really work.

The creaking? Yes, but I accept it as part of living in an historic house.
