Covering gas supply shut off valve?

Our gas supply shut off valve is located inside the first floor apartment of our house next to the electric panels and electric meters, behind the front door. It’s a house from the 1950s. This foyer area has dated wood paneling with an access cabinet about two feet from the ground which houses the gas supply shut off valve. We are updating the wood paneling in this foyer area to sheetrock. Wondering if we can just put an 8″x8″ spring loaded access panel to the gas shut off valve. There is enough space to turn off the valve in case of emergency, but I’m just not sure if the access panel needs to be bigger than that. We don’t need to pass any inspections, but I know ConEd comes every few years to check the meters and needs access to this valve. I don’t want to get a violation for not exposing more of the gas pipe. Just wondering what’s the official code?

Interesting! I will have to look into a see-through hatch. The emergency shut off was previously covered with a two foot tall wooden cubby about 4 inches from the wall. We have it flush now with a small spring loaded panel. I’m so nervous especially since the utility company does gas leak checks every 3 years now. Any plumbers can chime in?

I saw someone do this once and they were talking about the hatch for it. it is not my thing so i did not pay too much attention and it is years ago, but they put a 12×12 in. i mean it was big and stuck out on the wall. not sure if that was code.

where is master plumber? he is like a cop, never around when you need him.
