Cost of stairs to backyard?

Hi, we recently bought a brownstone and want to create access to backyard from the parlor floor. A full-on deck may be out of reach price-wise. Has anyone built a simple set of stairs? We did this a decade ago in our old house. They were wood and cost $2500. I have since learned that this was probably illegal. Any estimate for what a set of stairs made of steel might cost? (We were quoted about $30k to do a deck.) Thanks a lot.

We had a modest platform/landing with rail and then I think 8 stairs built plus a concrete pad under the last stair. You generally get priced per stair plus a per sq ft cost for landing and that includes footings. We had it done by lopopolo for around $5k which was a good price I think and as I’ve mentioned here the work was largely fine but not what we had contracted with him and so we ended up at odds. I don’t recommend him.

this does not really solve the problem if the guy does not have an existing deck. also the 3.5k for the stairs portion sounds proportional to the overall cost of a deck at 15-20k. i forgot to mention before that a large part of the install of our deck, in terms of man-hours, was digging and pouring the footings- 5 giant holes almost 6 feet deep. to me it seems extremely over engineered, but that was what the code required.

FYI we had new iron stairs fabricated to connect our existing parlor level deck to our backyard, and total cost was approx $3.5k, including installation and removal of existing stairs.

Project included two handrails with simple spindles , 8 steps with ‘subway grating’ style iron, stringers to which steps were attached, and a top 30″ high swinging gate.

If you’re trying to hire an iron workers to also install the wood deck, they’re going to sub out the wood most likely. Do that yourself. Find the most reasonable iron worker, let him do that part, then find someone else to do the wood yourself.

Most metal fabricators are so busy with all the new construction that they aren’t even interested in building decks. I couldn’t find anyone to do a deck on a job I was working & eventually had to fabricate it myself. The deck was fairly complicated with a spiral staircase attached. It had Ipe decking on deck and railing cap. I think it was approximately $20,000.

my deck cost about half what you were quoted. 20′ x 8′, steel and concrete with stairs down to the yard.

i am not sure what the code is on just a set of stairs but i imagine they would make you have some sort of landing outside the door, it does not sound safe to only have steps.
