coronavirus - how will construction work be affected??

We were hoping to begin renovation on our townhouse in the next few weeks… but since this work is “nonessential” does that mean we have to wait?

Also, we have not gotten official approval of our plans from DOB but were hoping to get that as soon as we give in our ACP5/ACP 21 after our recent abatement… Does anyone know if the DOB will be closed or have limited hours, and how that will affect our ability to get our plans approved and pull permits?

I’m in the middle of my renovation and my GC has stopped all work until further notice. He said that only electricians and plumbers are allowed to work since last Sunday. They told me they won’t go back to work until the ban is lifted.
In addition to this, suppliers are also having their own limitations, so even if you find a GC that will do the work you’ll find all sorts of roadblocks right now.
If you can wait, I would wait to start when things calm down.

Permits and inspections are still being approved and performed; we had two instances of each today. That being said, there is a LOT of sidetalk about possibilities moving forward. I really hope some of the stuff they mentioned does not get pushed through…

Almost all the companies I know that operate construction are in full swing; nothing was shut down by mandate and therefore they are full steam.
Our company is in full run as well doing Service work. Since Friday we have restored Heat/Hot Water to nearly 57 families ; they will never shutdown our work.
That being said, some sites and companies are having issues manning all the work. Some workers see it as a privledge to continue working and bring stability to society (whether you agree or not, that is the theory of Essential Services) while others do not.
Honestly a tough climate in this industry; never had such a confusing day as I did today but servicing families in need is our business.

they may still be out and about. we got an unscheduled elevator inspection and violation last week – but that was before the larger shutdown. some construction activity is continuing but it seems hard for some folks to get crews together for larger jobs so you might even have trouble working on the DL. also keep in mind that isolation is a perfect time for neighbors to get really into one anothers’ business.

Is all construction really exempt ? I read that plumbers and electricians could still work but didn’t read that construction work was allowed to continue.

Re DOB – any idea if they will be working remotely at all? Would it be stupid to begin some work on the downlow? We were always planning to get permits but if we have to wait 6 months now… Do you think DOB inspectors will be making checks under the lockdown?
