Cornice
Anyone recently replace their cornice recently? Any recommendations of who to hire to repair or replace? If you have an idea ballpark costs, can you share. Thank you.

Andrew Giancola did my cornice project. I’ve used him on numerous projects and they all turned out great. giancolacontractinginc.com

Let us know what you decide – it’s always easier to make recommendations to others than it is to pull the trigger and decide what to do myself 😉

Thanks for all the information. @rd684 very helpful slides. Many thanks. Arewedoneyet, thank you for all the helpful info. Happy to hear that both of you had successful replacements!
I may try to repair mine if I can. If anyone liked their contractor, please do share.

We had our rear cornice repaired in 2015 for $6,000 including scaffolding.
I’ve looked at these folks before for front cornice replacement made from fiberglass. http://afcornice.com
I’d agree with rd684 that front cornice replacements are very expensive so we’ve repaired/repainted ours where we can. I’m no expert but I believe the options for replacement include sheet metal, fiberglass, wood.

@rd684 thank you for the detailed answer. It seems like cornice work will be more cost effective if one needs facade repairs. Can you talk a little more about the PVC decking sheets. I am not sure I’m following.

I replaced/rebuilt my Cornice in 2020. All-in it cost $30-35k for a 25’w bldg.. My bldg. is on an Ave. and scaffolding would have meant building a shed, so we rented a boom lift for two weeks as a slightly cheaper option. It required DOT Permits in addition to DOB permits. DOT’s insurance and liability requirements had recently increased and it’s magnitudes higher than what typical GC’s carry, plus they now require an indemnity clause. So additional insurance coverage, permits and expediting alone cost north of $5k.
For the actual cornice work we created a new facia and overhang using PVC decking sheets after removing the old wood. We added 13 PVC decorative corbels to replace the existing ones. I ordered all of the PVC from Dykes. It was pre-primed and only needed painting. Lastly my roofer came back to tie the new cornice into the existing roof.
I don’t think there’s much ROI from this project but it looks great.

I meant a hanging scaffold.

Thank you. If you wouldn’t mind sharing that would be helpful. I was under the assumption they can hang off the roof to do the cornice. Am I wrong?

I’ll assume you mean the front one. We did a back one a few years ago and the largest cost was the scaffolding. Happy to share those costs if it’s useful. We’ve done minor repairs and painting on the front as total replacement seems to be in the category of more expensive than it’s worth at the moment.
