Contractor to fix chimney
Hello all,
My inactive brick chimney on a bushwick row house needs some repair. I think it wasn’t in great shape to begin with, and got worse as a result of Ida – and we got a little bit of water. After thinking about for a while, my guess is that’s we’re rats are getting into the house as well (see earlier post).
Since I’m new to all this – not sure who to call. – roofer? A mason? Any recommendations on provider would be appreciated.

OK we had work done on our chimney 10 years ago. We have mini splits now and the chimney is only serving the fuel used by the water heater.
But at the time we had forced air.
We had steel liners put in the chimney because bricks were loosening inside the chimney. Then we had a brick mason add new brick over the entire exterior , which was secured with steel rods .
The fuel used to heat your house deteriorates the brick. If bricks fall in the flue and block the smoke, dangerous gases may enter your home You may also have water working through the old mortar. Like any other exterior wall. You might have bad mortar to begin with.
If you can check the crawl space in the attic see if there is moisture up there. If so after you have your chimney done you should repoint.

Cate, fair enough. I don’t actually know what a chimney person is, I had a mason build my new chimney. They did do a great job waterproofing the membrane to the new chimney.
With the OP it seemed prudent to leave room that they are new and assuming, but don’t know for sure, their roof leak is 100% chimney related. So many people have gotten water without chimney issues in these storms.
I was assuming that chimney people are not qualified enough to be masons or roofers – like the sump pump or waterproofing people – not plumbers, not anything really. Perhaps that’s my bad assumption.

Dorkofwindsor, the chimney may need some kind of cap. As well, in my experience, the chimney folks are less expensive and more available than the roofers.

reading the tea leaves here i would call a roofer. an inactive chimney will get slathered with some waterproofing material. also, you could describe the leaks in more detail, there could also be other issues if this is your first roof. i would be trying to avoid a mason on an inactive chimney if possible – it could be a waste of money. if a roofer can waterproof it. mine is completely covered with gobs of membrane / tar / silver and has actually been the most reliable part of my roof . i’m not sure why one would have exposed brick on an inactive chimney – literally everyone in my neighborhood is fully covered with some form of waterproofing material (flashing cement etc) as well as the final coating of either white or silver. every time i get the roof re-coated the old chimney gets one as well.
just call one and tell them you would like to diagnose a leak, and see where it goes, then address the old chimney when you are up there and pick their brain. quotes are free! good luck.

They rebuild chimneys, vent chimneys and boilers, flash chimneys, clean chimneys, etc. Get the to eyeball the situation, tell you what they think you should do, and give you a quote.
