You could interview masons, particularly ones who do brownstone work specifically. It’s a complex and specialized art. If you want to restore a stoop that was lost and you want it to look like it was always there, you might be advised to engage an architect with experience doing drawings and technical drawings to re-create stoops that pass muster with the NYC Landmarks Commission. The LPC keeps a list of brownstone and architect restoration specialists. You can also hunt down projects where people have restored their stoops and talk to them about the experience and who they used. (There are sometimes ones in Brooklyn Heights, etc. ) Good luck.
