Contractor for Sidewalk Violation

A few of my neighbors and I got sidewalk violations from DOT. The city’s brochure said they would repair at an estimated cost of $15-$20 psf. We quoted a few contractors and got prices of ~$15 psf. Of all the ones we quoted, we are thinking of going with M&B Construction as they specialize in masonry work and seemed knowledge about such violations. Has anyone worked with M&B? Would also appreciate any recommendations on contractors or whether or not we should just let the city handle it and bill us later. Thanks in advance!

Thank you very much for the responses! We are not landmarked and there is some existing bluestone mixed with concrete. We were told by the city that we would not likely pass inspection if we kept the bluestone.

Definitely let the city handle if it’s already concrete. If you go with your own vendor, not only will you probably pay a few bucks more, but you also have to pay for permit and you can’t guarantee city will approve. If city does it, the price will be the lowest, they don’t need a permit and it’s guaranteed that the violation will be removed. But also be aware, that even tho they cited you for the violation, it may take them years to get to you.

I agree with transworld, if you have concrete; that’s what we did on our block. Bluestone is another matter and, if you have that, follow Arkady’s suggestion.

If it’s concrete already, just go with the city, so permits and inspection will be a breeze. Worth the few dollars you will spend extra.
