Contractor advice
I’m close to finishing some renovation work. Halfway through the job, the contractor started taking on other jobs and working inconsistently. He only scoped the first part and despite asking him for finish the change orders, he did not do it. Now he’s sent me a blatantly inflated bill: What’s the best way to handle?

Someone else’s work in 1-2 rooms. Specific items were
– Wall framing
– Removing a wall of tile and then the thinset 10′ x 8′
– Removing and resetting a tub/ putting in a new drain to connect to existing line
– Installing a electric heating mat in a 6′ by 10′ floor
– Straightening a wall
– Removing sheetrock from a ceiling then leveling about 10′ x 10′ then sheetrock, tape, sand and prime
– Sheetrock and taping only on an 8′ x 10′ wall
– Moving several light fixtures over by less than a foot
– Painting a 8′ x 10′ x 9′ high room
Any guidance appreciated. Thank you

OK … a smaller business.
Repairs to his own work? Or was he hired to fix someone else’s work?
Might try something like home advisor to find costs. Or can mention specific items, without disclosing his amounts. Someone here might know how much it should be to paint etc

Thx. He only had 2 men that got moved to a different job.
I don’t have a reference for many of the items as some of it pertained to repairs of prior work. But some if it seems excessive for the time it would take. Drywall/Taping/compound for a 8 x 10 wall was invoiced at $1000 prior to sanding etc etc .

From what I hear, this is very common.. Almost all contractors I have heard of do several jobs at a time. The way I understand it is that each contractor has what you might call task crews. One for demo, one for framing walls, one for painting etc and they are deployed according to need., as perceived by the foreman. Labor issues, absences, and material price hikes and shortages are very common in the construction industry these days. If your contractor is a poor manager on top of all this the result is a disaster for the customer.
There are great people in this line of work but many seem to forget the customer who is paying them.
You have your proposal to compare to the bill and you can start with a detailed line by line comparison and then try to settle a sensible amount, taking incomplete work into account. Good luck.
