Containment of Dust and Asbestos
Hello,
We live next door to a brownstone that is having a gut renovation. We have an infant at home and both parents working virtually. We haven’t really been paying much attention but it seems that there is dust coming into our home and/or just getting dislodged from all of the banging/work. Our tables, countertops, floors all have new very thin layers of dust throughout the day – despite cleaning. The neighbors house was built mid 1800’s. Are there any requirements for containing the dust and, including possible asbestos? For instance the windows are all opened without plastic covering and they are hoisting debris down to a small truck for removal. I’m noticing my throat and nose are getting scratchy and worried about my child. Any suggestions?

@work is fun No, the negative pressure fan belongs in the work area, to inhibit air/dust from leaving that location. If the poster has negative pressure in their apartment it will draw air through any cracks in the party wall, that’s what they want to avoid. It may be possible to create positive pressure though, that may help the situation.

Whether or not there’s asbestos, that dust is not great on your lungs.

Be wary of lead, as well. It’s so hard to contain all that, but you could consider renting your own negative air machine.

Based solely on my own renovation, there would have been asbestos testing done before permits were issued, so you’re likely ok there. Notwithstanding whatever the other rules are (which I’m not qualified to answer), I would reach out to the GC/owner to see if anything can be done.
