ConEd meter location
I found out that I need to replace my main breaker panel because they are Federal Pacific. Also the main service pan box is all rusted. We want to do this with permits which from what heard can take a while because it takes ConEd a while to unlock the meters. The kicker now is my electrician is saying I would have to move my meter outside which increase the cost for scope of work. Has anyone done this recently? Is this a requirement to move outside even though they are planning to upgrade everyone to smart reader?

To my understanding, the main panel breaker is what you use to cut off power to your house. The meter pans are the ConEd meters itself. Then you have this square metal box (service/ConEd box) near the ground where your service line comes into. Even in multiple fam houses, you only have one of these boxes.
The power cable outside goes into your house thru the service box > meters > main breaker > each unit in your house.

Thanks, Namahs. I need to check but I think we have enough ampage. Stupid question but what’s the difference between the main breaker box and the service panel box?

@NeoGrec If you just need to fix your main panel (breaker) box.. dont think you need to touch the service. Just contact electrician to fix it up. You only touch the service if want to increase amps or in my case to replace the service pan box. My service box is all rusted up and since I needed to replace the FPE panel box.. I’m doing it all together.

Our panel box is a horrible spaghetti junction-like mess. Does this mean we need new electrical service? Or can we just get an electrician to clean up the panel box? The house was completely rewired 17 years ago but it was easily the least satisfactory part of our renovation!

@ 16Street Would you be able to send me that in writing or point me in the direction where to get it? in case my electrician forces me to move it to the outside. Its just an eye sore and extra time and cost involve that is not necessary.

Similar situation — needed to replace the breaker panel and my electrician insisted the meter would have to be moved outside. I contacted Con Ed directly and, while they urged me to move the meters, they do not (and cannot) require that you do. I got it in writing. These things mar the facades of so many rowhouses — Con Ed really owes its ratepayers a better solution.

Maybe because eventually the state might look for a rate reduction in exchange for the labor savings?

It’s ironic that non-digital, but remote read, gas meters have been available for nearly 40 years. I had one installed by Brooklyn Union in the ’70s. I wonder why ConEd took so long to catch up?

After a huge Con Ed screwup with my service a year ago, I was offered the “smart” digital meters by way of apology. I’m still the only one on my block to have this service, and it makes a big difference. No more waiting for the meter reader, no meters outside (I’m in a historic district); it’s a real pleasure. If you can get those, you won’t regret it.

Also, it appears ConEd is in the middle of a program to install “smart meters” throughout NYC. One feature of the smart readers is that readings will be done remotely, which I assume obviates the need to relocate the meters outside.

If you’re not upgrading the service then just replace the breaker panel and service pan box and leave ConEd out of it. Use a licensed electrician and ensure everything is done to code. I see no reason to bring DOB or ConEd into what is a relatively small issue.

I don’t want them to be outside but my electrician said there is a chance ConEd would make us move it outside. I just want to avoid as this would change the scope of work and rate, also would make job take months more.
