ConEd and closing out old electrical permit

Hi all – still trying to get our CO after 4+ years and the last thing standing in our way is an old electrical permit from the 1990s (issued well before we bought the house!) that’s still open. We’ve redone ALL of the electrical in our house including new panel on out under our own permit – had inspections, etc., fully passed all that and it’s signed off.

However, this other old permit is for new service to the house – the work was never done but electrician just left the permit open. DOB says they won’t issue CO until we close the permit. Original electrician is nowhere to be found; he could be deceased for all I know. We’ve asked other electricians to supersede it, but they are reluctant …one said he’d do it, but only for $20K.

In the meantime, out of the blue ConEd just replaced the service to our house, from the street main up to the panel (i.e.: the work that was supposed to be done under the old permit). I asked them to issue me some sort of letter or something indicating that they did this work so I could show to DOB in the hope they would then a close the p ermit since the work has now actually been completed, but ConEd won’t put ANYTHING in writing (which is a whole other concerning issue…)

I just don’t know what to do – we’re obviously not going to hire someone to redo all the work that’s just been done, but we can’t live forever without a CO, I don’t have $20K to pay in what amounts to a bribe and I can’t raise the old electrician from the (possible) grave…

Any advice? Am really at the end of my rope here and ready to give up, pack it all in and move to Iowa or something.

Thanks both – we do have an expediter already on this project, but she said there’s nothing she can do about this so told us to get back to her after we have all the final clearances, so I’m kind of stuck!

First off, congrats on heading towards CO. That’s great and it works for you in terms of home value. I recommend getting an expediter to handle this. We have an engineer on staff at Direct Access Expediting.
