con ed power surge friend h&c electronics - post surge bill 4x historical usage

hi,

back in march i had a power surge/loss of phase (sorry if i am rough with the terminology) that resulted in my needing to replace the mainboard of my high efficiency boiler. prior to that i checked all outlets with a multimeter and did all basic troubleshooting i was capable of. post mainboard replacement everything appeared to be back up and running as normal, but then i started noticing con ed bills being extremely high. i had switched to smart meters some months before the con ed surge, so i had pretty good comps for historical usage. for month it was basically the same, which was no surprise since nothing had changed equipment wiser in the basement year over year.

i have called con ed and requested they replace the smart meter, but they assure me their remote tests say nothing is wrong. i said if the meter is the issue how would those remote tests prove anything. they are putting in a request for a smart meter expert to speak with me, but it looks like they want me to get a licensed electrician out at my own expense to check the connections.

question becomes :
1) how do i get them to check things on premises that i dont have to pay for first
2) if i do have to get an electrician how do i get them to pay it
3) am i right in thinking this is going to be $500 electrician visit at the very least?

thanks!

I posted about this on an earlier thread but there are two issues with smart meters. Firstly, they often return inaccurate readings. According to a Con Ed technician who came to our house recently, this is quite common. Secondly (and this one is specific to NEW meters, whether it’s a smart meter or not), several hundred new meter numbers were duplicated resulting in homeowners receiving bills that include usage at another address, in ADDITION to your own usage. To add insult to injury, the other address with the duplicate meter # is a commercial customer. This is what I was told by a Con Ed employee who came to switch out our meters (which had originally been installed a year ago) because they had identified that we had this problem. These two issues may or may not be the cause of your high bills. But one thing’s for certain: you MUST get Con Ed to send out a tech to inspect your meter. A remote test, as you point out, proves nothing. If you need to hire a reputable, experienced electrician, try Laredo on Staten Island (718-227-6607). Good luck!

if you haven’t already, you might want to consider suing them for the cost of replacing your boiler panel. i know this is not an answer to your actual question, but I don’t have any real advice there except to continue making a pest of yourself.
