Code question re electrical meters and conduit on center of facade

Hi all, so our house and our neighbors across the street who are just starting a major upgrade both have meters and a conduit (sorry, don’t know if there’s a technical term for that) running up the center of the facade. It’s exceedingly ugly. Is there some code that dictates placement of meters? I imagine moving the meters and conduit would ultimately be a gigantic headache and not worth the cost. @Bobjbkln – yes, that’s it. Unfortunately no undergrounding of utilities here yet. And too bad they didn’t just go straight down the right side of the facade, with the electrical box on the right side of the basement. But maybe that’s not possible (can the boxes be on a party wall?).

@Cate. From the picture, it looks like that the block is served by overhead wiring, so the power has to come down on the exterior. from the roof level (like in solar).

The only exterior conduit I’ve seen (and running up the center of the building) is for solar on the roof.

@Janedrew – it would be, but that’s not nearly as fun…
@Bob Marvin – Yes, it really makes no sense. But those smart meters aren’t that smart. Last summer our smoke alarms went off for no reason and so I called ConEd to see if there was a brownout. They said they couldn’t tell even when they had smart meters installed.

Another friend said the electrical riser has to be perpendicular to the main electrical box, so if that’s located in a basement interior wall (as ours is) they will go up the center of the facade. But he also said there’s no reason at all for it to be on the exterior.

If I see the electrician who’s a regular at the bar next week I’ll ask him.

I wrote an article about this years ago for our neighborhood newsletter the Lefferts Manor Echo, which I then edited. IIRC ConEd was insisting on those ugly outside meters when they installed an updated electric service. They would relent in Historic Districts if the homeowner requested and could supply a letter from LPC stating that the house was indeed in a HD. I’m surprised they’re still doing this when smart meters make meter reading visits obsolete. .
