Coating/paint for interior cellar wall

I have a late 1800s brownstone with stone cellar walls. The cellar is dry; no flooding or other issues. The walls are not finished, but have been painted and/or coated with something in the past. There is some crumbling in places, and i have noticed a lot of old mortar dust in some places. What’s the best product of coating/painting the walls? Thanks for any advice. Hoping to this just clean things up and keep the dust down.

I had a similar issue and just ended up stuccoing over the stone to create one flat monolithic surface.

part of the function of the mortar in a stone foundation is to be softer than the stone (to prevent the stone itself from cracking) and degrade over time (it can then be re-pointed). You could have all the loose material removed, repoint and then use a product called thorocoat to seal the entire area. There is a healthy debate as to whether it is a good idea to seal a wall from the inside (as it could lead to water damage issues). There have been a number of threads on this issue; here is one: https://www.brownstoner.com/forum-archive/2010/04/thorocoat-yes-o/
