Coal chute doors and water

We started getting the occasional trickle of rain into our coal chute and we have been wanting to replace the old flimsy door (it seems like it’s made of tin or aluminum?) with a new steel one anyway. The steel door company (Steel Masters NYC) says their doors don’t guarantee water staying out. We are surprised by this. Many of our neighbors have those flat steel doors that you see everywhere. What do people do to seal against water and pests? [IMG_8264](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:u4XV:img_8264.jpeg.jpg)

you might want to caulk the perimeter of the steel door frame where it attaches to the concrete.

I bought one of those black rubber backed mats at lowes. Works perfectly for me.

It’s definitely coming through the cover. We can see the drips and trickles from the top.

I am so perplexed by this entire issue — Steel Masters says steel doors are not water tight, but when I walk around Brooklyn, 80 percent of homes have them. So do people just have water coming in and deal with it?

Your cover looks pretty water resistant. Are you sure that’s how the water is getting in. More likely its leaking through the walls from cracks in the sidewalk. You can see the sidewalk water stains in your picture.
