Cluster mailbox in the street?

I recently purchased a new mailbox for my three units brownstone (this USPS approved model 3406D-04BLK from Salsbury industries). While I initially thought I’d just put in the front yard, by the stoop, I’ve been wondering if it is possible to place it on the sidewalk, in front of the house. I’ve seen a lot of those mailboxes on sidewalks, but I don’t know what the process might be for getting these types of permits. Has anyone done this, or have some pointers to how to go about it?
