Clover or Wildflowers in backyard?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has planted either clover or a wildflower mix in their backyard? Any successes/ failures or tips?

We have a crazy weed jungle that takes a half-day to weed and comes back quickly. We were going to try killing it with solarization, but missed the boat this summer (it’s too late in the season/ not hot enough). We were thinking of trying to seed white clover in hopes that it might out-compete the weeds.

I searched the forum & saw one person tried clover and ended up with weeds and moss, but I was curious if others have tried. It’s very cheap and the best time to plant it is mid August so I feel like we don’t have much to lose in trying, but any advice would be appreciated!

BobMarvin and slope farm, I think you are right– the weeds are too entrenched and will come back– the amount of roots we are digging up is unbelievable. We’re going to throw the clover seed down to if it takes in any patches just as a test.

Lurker– that’s good to know! We may try that but after solarizing the whole yard, probably for an entire summer.

FWIW, we had terrific success with wildflower mix in terms of growing–didn’t have previous weed issues. We had lots of light and added some annuals to it to make sure we had flowers this year.

Yes, I fought the weeds and the weeds won. Slowly throwing down some informal bluestone, enlarging the flower beds, and trying various forms of groundcover.

I don’t think any seeds you plant will out-compete established weeds.
