Closed out a 20+ year old Electric permit

I wanted to share this story with you guys because last week I was up shits creek with this issue and I checked this forum for a solution and found none.
I’m in the process of selling my house and the buyers hired a company to do a full search on the property. They found a 20+ year old electrical permit that was never closed from 1998. None of our lawyers found this permit, even when we bought the house. I’ve only owned this house for 4 years and it was now my responsibility to close this permit. The worst part is that we did a FULL gut renovation and if we knew, the electrical permit that we opened could have been linked to override the other one. The electrical work done in 1998 doesn’t exist anymore because everything was ripped out and replaced.

Checked this forum for a solution: Depression started to set in.
Asked the engineer thats helping us close our general construction permit: He said we have to hire a licensed electrician and have them take over the job. Probably get another inspection etc.
So I went nuts and started emailing every help link on the DOB site , called 311 etc.
DOB Response: Totally useless sacks of nothingness and bureaucratic nonsense. They summed it up by saying the old permit does not superseded the new work. I wrote them back saying that’s impossible. The old work doesn’t exist so how can it be inspected and that we passed an electrical inspection 2 years ago. Their response was about 6 paragraphs that I’m sure was copy and pasted from a novel, summing up that I have to get a licenses electrician.

Just when i gave up hope, I got an email telling me to call the electrical department for Brooklyn. I called and got a real human on the phone. He listened and casually advised me that i have to write a letter, list the old permit number, the new permit number, write that one overrides the other, have it notarized and send it back to them (email)……… So I did all this and 1 week later the permit is CLOSED!!!!! I have to pay a $55 processing fee but it’s CLOSED.

CONGRATULATIONS! Seriously. Your description of the DOB “Totally useless sacks of nothingness and bureaucratic nonsense” is unfortunately an all too often apt description, until as you found, you manage to get through to the right human.
