Choosing interior doors

Earlier I asked for sources of interior doors, but I was getting ahead of myself. I’m pretty sure we want pre-hung, and not hollow core, but should we get MDF or wood or what? I think what I am used to is what is called Stile & Rail Wood – is that a good choice (possibly expensive)? At the moment we need four doors, and the GC says we need them soon. Two doors are bathroom door, and I see warnings against using wood for thoses.

So dykes has a list of door makers on their website. Truestile is still there. Rv is gone.

The reeb is made with a stave construction faced in mdf. Mdf is ok to a point. And if it gets nicked, it can be fixed. But they do assemble their doors with dowels. Perhaps the modern dowels they are using are stronger thsn these cheap hardware store dowels we get stuck buying. I am going to look at the reviews on reeb and see what their issue might be.

R valley has some local suppliers on their website.

Now this: i have not bought a new door in over ten years. In that time, rouge valley could have turned to junk just like jeld wen did. Its the race to the bottom. And i know this because people call me and ask me to fix what they are led to believe are quality doors by sales people at places like hd who do not know the first thing about any of this stuff.

Dykes says they do not carry Rogue Valley Doors. No. 1 above is I think Reeb, and I am finding complaints about Reeb quality online.

We checked out the doors we have. Can’t take pictures because getting at them is too hard but we measured them and my husband says he can adapt three of them. But nothing is wide and tall enough for our bedroom door (36 wide 8 feet tall). We got three quotes from Dykes; they didn’t mention Rogue Valley but I will ask. Also we forgot to inquire about having a glass panel. The quotes we got for prehung paneled door are

1. $525 lead time 1 1/2 week, “solid particle core cambrian”; 1.75 in thick, model Cambrian, hinge manufacturer Reeb, interior door brand: Steves. unfinished (we had asked for primed).
Does this one at $525 count as junk?

2. Trustile $1,022, lead time 6-7 weeks, MDF; jamb material and jamb stop materials paint grade “finger joint poplar” primed

3. Trustile $1730, lead time 15-16 weeks, Trustile interior poplar (paint grade) door, premium prime finish

10 or more years ago, dykes had wood rouge valley doors for like 350 each, stained grade.

Thanks, Steve. I am tied up babysitting for a granddaughter but my husband is going to take a close look at the old doors we have to see if one might work for our bedroom door. For the bathroom doors (and the bedroom door if what we have isn’t the right width and can’t be adjusted) my game plan is to go to Dykes and discuss our needs with them. I don’t really care if the doors are stave construction or not, but we want good quality (and I like the look of some kind of paneling, not just a flat surface). I figure Dykes won’t be a bargain, but we would rather overpay for quality than “save money” on junk. (I’m not saying those extremes are the only choices, but we don’t a lot of time to seek out bargains
.)

Ok. I address this in you other post. What you are thinking of is stave construction. The stiles and rails are the verticle and horizontal structural members of doors, repectively. The glass or panels are the center(s) of the doors. Now a days the real low end doors are pressed out of one piece of something and the stile, rail, and panels are molded as one.

There is a company in georgia that makes door staves. Google them, they have a great cut away photo of door staves on their website. Btw, most of the entry doors and some of the interior doors in brooklyn are stave construction.

If you wish me to take a look at your old doors, i might post a link here to a new website i have under development here. Or you can go through my old site.
