Chips from wooden cornice in front of the house

I have been hearing some pecking sounds coming from the front of my roof during the last few days. It only occurs in the afternoon (short time, perhaps for an hour and never at night). Today, I found some small wooden chips by the entrance to our house that seem to be coming from the wooden cornice. Does anyone have similar experiences? Could it be chipmunks? Birds? (I don’t hear running sounds. Only the pecking). Appreciate any input.

Sorry, I would NOT recommend who we used or how they did anything. We had to rebuild the entire roof and they tripled their price when they opened the roof with impending rain.

Starlings also like to find points of entry and make nests inside though I don’t know if they make pecking sounds. Probably not.

get some binoculars and inspect your cornice. woodpeckers tend to peck somewhere they are finding food so if your cornice is being pecked regularly you might have a bug problem. it could also be squirrels. they are pains in the ass.

i have not experienced this in the city, but woodpeckers will work on houses. when i lived in wilmington, nc, i heard something banging on the metal downspout of a neighboring house and when i went to investigate, i saw it was a wood pecker. they are looking for bugs and obviously not too bright. i doubt chipmunks would make noise and i have not seen any of them in the developed areas of the city but they are in Forest Park.
