Chimney Liner Questions!
We’re putting a stainless liner into our unlined chimney in a Bed-Stuy brownstone – and so far have two really different quotes: $2500 from Ace Chimney for a 4″ liner, and $3500 from A&J for a 6″ liner. Anybody have any advice (either about these two companies, or about the real difference between the two sizes)? Obviously, saving $1000 is appealing, but not if it means getting a less functional liner, etc.

As poster above, the size of the liner is dependent on the total BTUs of your gas boiler/hot water heater.. 4″ seems a bit too small since you mention a brownstone and I assume you have multiple floors. Definitely ask the expert why they are proposing 4″ or 6″.

the size of the liner should be based on the capacity of the boiler and the height of the building. you may want to consult an expert to provide you with the best advice. ask the vendors what the basis for the proposed size is.

I have only used A and A or A and J to line chimneys when I have installed boilers. Both outfits were really honest and dependable.. That said I cannot imagine a 4 inch liner being sufficient for a standard steam or hot water boiler and water heater. I would definitely go with the larger liner
