Dfreed1, you might want to start a separate thread for this. First thing you might want to ascertain if the chimney is currently being used by the boiler. Second, what fuel was burned in the fireplace originally and what are you trying to use there now? For example, if you have a circa 1850s house with marble mantels, likely they were originally for burning coal and the firebox will be too small for wood. (Another common scenario was faux marble painted and incised slate mantels that burned coal to heat houses in the 1890s without central heating.) OTOH, you may have an ornate wood and tile mantel in a well-to-do house after central heating was the norm, and it may have been a gas fireplace. If the gas pipe is still there, which it may well be, relining the chimney and restoring to gas may be an option. Or you may have had some other style of mantel and/or fuel, depending on your home. I have not tried to get any fireplace in our house working myself, but I have rebuilt the floor of a firebox (think that was $400 or so about eight years ago), relined a chimney (for the boiler) with metal replacing clay (about $3K in 2011) and been quoted “at least” $6,000 recently for relining a chimney to use it as a vent for a stove. We switched out a decorative mantel for $1,000 in 2012.

Want to restore fireplace in parlor floor in 4 story brownstone. What is cost and what is involved in installation. Does it require breaking walls. Also if fireplace sealed up assume fire box will have to be rebuilt and mantle etc purchased. Thanks

Hi – highly recommend A&A chimney, https://www.yelp.com/biz/a-and-a-chimney-and-fireplace-company-brooklyn They are extremely honest in a field that sadly seems filled with less than honest companies; long story short they ended up fixing others’ shoddy work, and actually saved us unneeded expense on a different aspect of the lining that was recommended by a different company. Very experienced w/ Brownstones in Bed Stuy. Goodluck!
