Chimney and fireplace repair

We have a 2 family in Bushwick and are looking into opening up the old fireplace and adding a gas insert for fire/heat. We also would like to line the two flue’s in the chimney. In the process of investigating a solution, we’ve uncovered a ton of scammers and loads of overpriced vendors. Hoping someone here has had a positive experience with a vendor. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, those coal baskets are the ones. The restoration guy showed us with one installed and a sophisticated CO meter, that there were no CO fumes. I ran one often in my brownstone after I sealed off the flue and it threw decent heat as well. They are really efficient burners.

Hey DIBS – that link is for vented gas burning coal baskets. Did you mean to share a link for unvented ones, or did the chimney restoration guy say that the coal baskets that are listed as being for vented use might somehow also be ok in unvented applications?

You can add a gas insert and close the flue. I’ve posted about this before ever since it was recommended by the most prominent historic chimney restoration company in Philadelphia.
