Change color of new brownstone?
Hi all, we’re having our stoop redone and are VERY unhappy with the color. We’re not redoing our facade, which is painted a darker brown than a “typical” brownstone color so I wanted the new stoop to match that – when we hired the contractor he assured us we could have ANY color we wanted and that he could absolutely match the paint color. Of course, after we hired him, he started pushing us to go with the standard color. I thought I’d finally succeeded in convincing him that we really needed the darker color and, when the new layer is completely wet, it looks lovely. However, as it’s drying, it looks AWFUL. It’s like a mottled, splotchy, pinkish sand color. The walls don’t even match the stairs. I’m utterly disappointed and just cannot have a stoop looking like this – it’s way worse than it was when it was cracked and painted. I’ve tried explaining over and over to contractor that I’m not happy, but he insists everything is fine (in other words, he likes it, so why don’t I?) I don’t know what to do – we don’t have the budget or nerves to go through the whole chipping process and start all over again. Is anyone aware of any dye or stain or something that can be applied to the brownstone/cement mix *after* it’s been applied? Or anything else we can do to rectify this issue? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for checking in… the stucco work is done now, but we’re waiting for samples to arrive from the concrete stain place before we go any further. The colors are still all over the place. The contractor has already been mentioned above – sorry to say, Bernice, we are not having the same experience as you 🙁

An acid wash will make it considerably lighter. When I had my facade done, the color was very dark brown. After the acid wash was done (they said they did the acid wash twice because they were not happy with first wash), the color started to get lighter. Took about 6 months for the final color to appear. I am very happy with the results.

Thanks so much everyone for all the inputs. Yes, the contractor did say he will do an acid wash once everything is done, but he says that will make the overall color lighter, not darker. The bigger issue to me – tho I’m very unhappy with the color in general as it’s NOT what we’d agreed – is the fact that the colors are different everywhere – stairs different from each other, stairs different from the walls, the walls are even different halfway through (ie where they stopped one day, and started up again with a different mix the next day – and yes, I know the stucco will take time to cure but these are sections that were done within on day of each other and are still totally different even a week+ later), and everywhere is soaking up water and leaving stains (likely a much bigger problem than the aesthetics, but of course I’m focused on what I see right now).
Would an acid wash actually even out different colors? Or, as I suspect, would it just change the colors that are already there, but each differently? (if you spray acid on 4 different colors, they won’t magically all become the same color, they will be come 4 different versions of what they were initially — no?)
Advanced Build Co — I will absolutely call the company you’ve recommended for the stain – thanks so much – I feel like putting color on will help the situation more than washing it off. Brikenny – do you have any recommendations for a product?
They’ve also now made it so that we can’t open the front gate all the way – it digs into the newly finished wall. 3 days now, we’ve opened the gate and made a dent, they fixed it the same way, we made a dent again, they fixed it the same way, and so on. I pointed it out to them today and their solution was for us not to open the gate (?!) Brickrowhouser — sadly, yes, I fear it may be the same guys. Very concerning.
Anyway – thanks again very much for the inputs. At the moment I just feel stuck and need a productive place to vent 😉 A few new photos attached [IMG_2021](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:f6UG:img_2021.jpg.jpg) [IMG_2020](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:V1VA:img_2020.jpg.jpg) [IMG_2022](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:GHAl:img_2022.jpg.jpg)

Sometimes the whiter tone is calcite or other minerals gravitating to the surface as the “brownstone” (it’s really just stucco) is curing, making it look pale. Did your contractor mention a “power-wash” or “acid wash” after it has cured? These finalizing treatments may have been intended all along. If it still comes out the wrong color there are definitely stains that can be sprayed that closely match the original color palette.

There are acid stains available for concrete and stucco that can be applied after the new stucco has been fully cured ( 30-45 days) www.eaglesealer.com/acid-stain or https://www.eaglesealer.com/acid-stain
Apply a couple of sample colors in a inconspicuous area and let fully dry or have your contractor make up a sample board on a sheet of cement board using the same stucco mix as he is using for the finish on your project You can then mix and match the acid colors to find something suitable

I had a similar issue with the guys who did my stoop last fall. They promise any color and then limited me to 3 ugly ones. The initial color was so RED that I had them remove and redo it. It’s better but I’m still quite unhapoy with the work and process. (word of advice: do not give the final payment until they have thoroughly cleaned up ).
The color is now fine but it started chipping immediately, they also made a huge mess and permanently stained my original bluestone. Unfortunately I was dumb and did not insist that they use proper drop cloths and paid them after completion – not clean up. Lastly they took weeks off in the middle of he project, with debris everywhere, killing my garden and angering my tenants.
Wondering if we used the same guys.

it appears the sides of the stoop are gray, not “brownstone” color. The blotchiness seems relatively normal, and doesn’t particularly bother me, but the water stain seems concerning, and I’m not sure what’s causing it. It should dissipate once the rain dries.

Thanks everyone – he’s not done yet (which is why I’m hoping there may still be the chance to darken the color) – So no acid wash yet, but he has told me that will only lighten the final color, not darken. A few photos attached here – that water stain has been there since the first rain post installation – he assures me it will eventually go away but … it will rain again and these stains look plan ugly – but this is “normal”? Also no explanation for the big splotch in the middle either. Last photo shows the painted facade vs. new stone. And I have not yet paid him in full, 1/3 of the total payment is pending final completion.

@housepoor makes a good point. Prior to doing the acid wash, there is a slightly whitish film/powder look that is removed when the acid wash is applied. This could account somewhat for the blotchy and light look, though it sounds like it still won’t be as dark as you were hoping.

I am sorry for your problem. Although it may be a cautionary tale by now, did the contractor put up a small sample patch using the color formula he would use? Ideally you would let it dry for a week so the actual color comes out. Also, did they do an acid wash once they were done with the resurfacing? My understanding is that will change the color and the texture of the surface. Good luck…

Thanks Arkady – I should’ve been more clear though that we completely rebuilt the stoop – chipped away the old surface & resurfaced with a cement coat and now the brownstone/cement finish coat. We don’t want to paint it (as I understand that was the reason for the deterioration problems had before) — we just want the color of the new stone of the stoop to match that of the paint on the house. I know it will never be exact since they’re 2 different materials, but right now it’s just not even close, not even in same color family.

There are durable paints you can use. My stoop was renewed & painted 4 years ago & still looks new. Phone VinRoy at Park Slope Brownstone – 646 554 4513. He’s very reasonable & gives decent prices & can probably match your color exactly.
