Chandelier Placement not Centered Over Fireplace

We are attempting to do a respectful remodel to our brownstone and preserve as many original details as possible. The living room ceiling (on the parlor floor) is in tact which is great except that the detailed paneling and medallion are not centered on the fireplace. We are working on furniture layout and everything looks funky bc the light fixture is off center. I have been trying to find a light fixture that is not symmetrical (to trick the eye) but so far, I have not found anything that I like. Or I like fixtures that are way out of budget. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with these tricky ceilings. Is the ceiling detail worth keeping or should we demo the detail and start over with the medallion placement? Right now, the demo costs less than finding the right light fixture. Has anyone solved for this issue before? I see several ceilings within neighboring brownstones that are still in tact so it makes me think others have figured it out. Would love your advice! Thanks in advance.

Thank you everyone! I’m so appreciative of your advice. The medallion is centered on the room and the fireplace is lined up with the parlor entry way. Ahh! Maybe in retrospect, we could’ve centered the entryway on the medallion.

I think we’re going to go ahead and live with the crookedness. We looked into taking out the original detail and or maybe just the medallion since it is so dominant but apparently the entire living room ceiling might fall if we start messing with it! So, I think the decision is made for us… at least for now!

Swagging! Great idea. We’re going to do this in our kitchen to get a pendant light over the table. Our kitchen light is centered in the room but not to the chimney nor the table, and the ceiling is tin so the opening cannot be moved.

Beautiful ceiling and medallion. The cheapest advice there is — leave it. You own an old home, they have their quirks, and once there is furniture in the room, you can easily occupy the visual space with an ornate firewood holder or tools or something to the right of the fireplace. If centering a lamp to the fireplace is the ultimate goal, I recommend swagging a pendant.

@Cfree1 you have an incredible ceiling and medallion. It would not bother me that it is centered in the room instead of the mantle as it is a quirky original feature.

It bothers you though so I would consider a cabinetry built in or bookcase potentially on both sides of the mantle with one side being larger than the other to reduce the appearance of the medallion not being centered. This would be a semi-permanent solution that would not damage anything and could always be removed in the future.

As @lmiller said you could also consider a chandelier that is wider, more spread out.

Absolutely keep that gorgeous medallion! Not only does it “tie the room together, man,” but you’ll never be able to replicate it if you remove it (and you’ll still have the other ceiling plaster detailing). I don’t think the off-centered aspect is too much of an issue, but if it’s bothering you– and you wouldn’t be posting here if it wasn’t– I’d suggest going with a flushmount-style light there. Or honestly, maybe consider putting less obtrusive lights elsewhere on the ceiling and leaving the plaster medallion as a beautiful, original, ornate decorative element.

Our place had all the original detail stripped out 90 or so years ago, but I’d have killed for a ceiling like that, even if it wasn’t perfectly square or lined up to other room features. (And as it was, when we were adding a new plaster medallion, we faced our own choice: we could center it between the windows, but then it would be off center with the medallion in the other room; or we could line it up with the medallion in the other room, but then it would be off center with the windows. None of these brownst ones are perfectly designed, but trust me, you’ll hardly ever be standing in the exact right spot where you’ll notice!)

You could frame out the wall to make the chimney bigger. It would waste space in your room, and you’d have to et the plaster to match which would be annoying to deal with. How about the parlor entry doors, is the chandelier lined up with those? Maybe that could be your justification. Construction limitations may have resulted in it being impossible to align the fireplace and the doors, and I’d tend to say if it’s centered in the room, and with the entry door from the foyer, it’s probably appropriate. Don’t worry about this, it’s not gonna bother you in a year, I promise.

I was going to say the same thing as janedrew. I’d build out the chimney and center the mantel on the fixture, maybe with a big mirror on top and sconces on either side. It’s by far the most cost effective way to go.

@cfree1 that’s really nice detailing on your ceiling. Personally, I would try to keep the medallion and decoration. It’s a great original feature. You are lucky to have it.

I can’t tell from the picture but is the medallion centered to something else, like the overall room or doors? 120+ years ago someone decided to build the room that way and they probably had a reason. It is not unusual to have fireplaces offset from room centers, doors etc. and therefore medallions don’t line up–most of mine are offset. Figure out the logic behind it and you may feel better about keeping it original.

I would go with a chandelier that isn’t just vertically hanging down, either higher to the ceiling or more spread out. You’ll hang pictures and that can visually change how things look. Keeping original details can involve adapting how you are decorating and laying out the room, so I’d work around it, adjust to it, instead of changing such a nice ceiling.

But this is my opinion–you’ll be the person living with it every day 🙂

We are inclined to keep the ceiling and medallion because they are original to the house but the ornate detail on the ceiling really pronounces the off-centeredness of the medallion. You see how the medallion is centered on the room and not the fireplace. Do you think an off-centered light fixture would be too distracting? Had a similar issue in our house–we didn’t have the original medallion (sadly), but in one room had to either align the light fixture to the pocket door, or the fireplace. These are not themselves aligned, so it was one or the other.

We intentionally went off-center from the fireplace as a result, and decided it was better to be lined up with the pocket door. I think we ended up concluding that these things just never lined up originally and that’s how it was, and it looks fine. It’s logical because it lines up to something, just not the fireplace. Of course–you’d need to get comfortable with whatever you decide.

Two thoughts would be first, if the plaster medallion is intact, I’d be inclined to keep it just because it is original. Second is that the less “droopy” the fixture is, the less sensitive the placement would be to furniture layout, which may change anyway over time.

I have a feeling that the original Victorian architects didn’t think about these thi ngs the same way we do today, we expect that everything has to be lined up but that’s not what they were trying for.
