Chair Caning

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place to re-cane this lovely Eastlake-style rocking chair I was just given? [Eastlake Rocker, lo res](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s2/:brownstoner:5WPT:eastlakerockerlores.jpg.jpg)

Try New York Chair & Caning, 2825 Atlantic Ave, 718-277-2263. Sometimes slow to respond and slow to complete the work but quality is first rate! But they don’t do hand re-caning, they use the sheets. For a referral to old-fashioned hand re-caning, maybe ask some of the few remaining antique dealers at the other end of Atlantic!

Thank you. The artist who did the decorative painting in our house just recommended them also.

We used Darius of Tri State Furniture repair for an antique wooden chair that needed a new woven straw seat. Based on the number of chairs in his workshop, and quality of the work he did for us, I bet his re-caning is fantastic, too! 917-293-9795. He’s over on Meeker.

Steve,
The chair is currently hand-caned. I’m not adverse to having it redone with machine-made cane sheets, but grooves would need to be routed out for the splines that hold the sheets in place. Of course I’d rather have real hand caning, IF I can afford it.

I knew that was coming.

You can buy sheets of that stuff.
