Chain fail/wire cleaning for chimney?
We live in a 1905 co-op with a fireplace. A chimney sweep came today for a cleaning and, after spending some time trying to clean it with a wire brush, said there was too much creosote build-up for a normal cleaning. They are recommending a “chain wire” service, which they quoted as $1200. We use our chimney a lot, and were probably a year overdue for a cleaning, but this seems like a lot. Has anyone had this type of cleaning done, or encountered a similar issue? Any sense of how much I should expect to spend? I’m happy to spend $1200 to keep our fireplace in safe working order if needed.

It depends on how many floors and the structure of your building/fire place flu etc. But this is not something you want to be cheap with and I am sure your co-op wants to be sure you have a very experienced company doing this.
Creosote build up is a Building fire waiting to happen.
